Updated: March 29, 2019 Purchasing dinnerware may require some thought and planning while caring for most dinnerware is fairly easy. Whether choosing fine bone china or casual stoneware the following hints will help care for them.

Steps

  1. Decide on what type of dinnerware you wish to purchase. Bone or porcelain china is best for more formal occasions while stoneware stands up to daily use.
  2. Hand Wash antique china. Antique china could be fragile due to age and use of the dinnerware.
  3. Hand Wash Method: Scrape plates and wash in warm, sudsy water dishwater. Rinse well. Let dry.
  4. Place a clean dish towel, or sink mat, at the bottom of the sink to help pad it. This helps prevent breakage of both fine dinnerware and crystal.
  5. Wash glassware, dinnerware, flatware and finally pans in that order when washing dishes by hand.
  6. Modern china, stoneware and earthenware can be washed in the dishwasher.
  7. Dishwasher Method: Load the dishwasher so the dinnerware is not subject to rubbing of dishes during the wash cycle.
  8. Keep flatware and any other metallic objects away from the dinnerware. Rubbing between the metal and dinnerware can cause gray marks.
  9. Gray marks can be removed by scrubbing with a mild cleanser such as Bar Keeper's Friend or Bon Ami.
  10. Wash dinnerware on the shortest cycle. These cycles are usually called light wash or china.
  11. Store plates with paper towels, cloth or dish protectors between each plate.
  12. Hang tea cups on hooks, if possible. Stack tea cups, with a protector between cups, in stacks of two.
  13. Stay away from using lemon scented dishwasher detergent as this type of detergent may damage dinnerware.

Tips

  • Earthenware china dishes are fired at a low temperature. They may be fragile. Check the manufacturer's specific directions for use and care. The advantage of earthenware is the low cost.
  • Do not use dinnerware with metallic trim in the microwave oven.
  • Bone china is made from bone ash. It is fired at a higher temperature, is thin, lightweight and extremely durable.
  • Corelle Ware is an American style of durable glass-based dinnerware. It is famous for its durability, microwave ability, and low weight. Corelle Ware is good for casual dining.
  • Porcelain china is fired at a higher temperature and is translucent. A white clay called kaolin is used to make porcelain china.
  • Stoneware dishes are fired at a higher temperature and are typically sturdier. Check the manufacturer's directions for specific use and care.
  • For both fine and casual dinnerware there is usually a wide variety of matching serving pieces, bowls, and various accoutrements available to round out the collection.
  • A fine china place setting usually has a dinner plate, salad plate, bread and butter plate, teacup and saucer as a set.
  • Search the web or read food magazines to find china replacement services. China replacement services replace a broken piece of china. Buyers can also purchase pieces to add to existing sets once a pattern is discontinued.
  • A casual dinnerware place setting usually has dinner plate, salad plate, mug and bowl.
  • China and casual dinnerware patterns are often discontinued. Most manufacturer's and sellers will give notice once a pattern line is to be discontinued. Buyers will have time to purchase missing pieces.
