Updated: August 17, 2019 Factory Reset Protection (FRP) is a safety feature built into the latest versions of Android by some manufacturers that's meant to help protect your device in case it falls into the wrong hands. If the device is reset from recovery mode (without unlocking the device), FRP will lock the phone down and prevent phone setup until you've signed in with the Google account previously added to the device. This ensures that even if a thief manages to get their hands on your phone, they can't set it up without your Google account credentials. However, the same feature can greatly inconvenience users attempting to get into the phone legitimately. If you've bought a used phone locked by FRP, or recovered and reset a stolen phone that still had the thief's account on it, what's meant to be a useful safety measure can end up locking you out of your own phone. Thankfully, there is a way to bypass FRP and setup your device, though it involves a tricky series of steps.

Accessing Chrome Through TalkBack and YouTube

  1. Reboot your phone. Once you've been blocked by FRP, reboot your phone to be taken back to the first setup screen. You should be greeted by a blue welcome panel, with 'Hello' or 'Hi There' written in white.
  2. Open Visual Settings. Touch the white eye icon in the bottom left marked Visual Settings to open a menu with a list of accessibility options.
  3. Select the TalkBack feature from the list. TalkBack is an accessibility service that functions as an onscreen narrator. While the service itself isn't going to be used, an exploit in TalkBack allows you access to a bunch of other features. Open the TalkBack menu and this should take you to a screen that allows you to enable the service.
  4. Enable TalkBack. In the TalkBack menu, you should see an option marked 'Use Service' toggled off . Click on the switch to trigger a prompt that asks you if you want to use TalkBack. Click OK on the prompt to confirm it and toggle TalkBack on . This should take you to the main TalkBack screen. Note that from this point, the phone will begin to read all text on the screen back to you, which can be a bit annoying. TalkBack can be disabled later, but is necessary to get through to device settings.
  5. Draw an 'L' on the screen. This will open the TalkBack Global Context Menu. Through this, you can access to many of TalkBack's settings. The global context menu will allow you to access the phone's main settings, which will allow you access to the web browser.
  6. Tap on 'Dim screen' from the list. The dim screen option should be the lowest option on the menu. Tapping it should select and highlight the option in green. Make sure dim screen is highlighted before you continue.
  7. Double tap the highlighted option to confirm your selection. TalkBack makes the phone behave a bit differently. Tapping does not directly open menus and toggle switches, but selects the option waiting for you to confirm it. Double tap the highlighted dim screen option to be taken to the settings app with the text to speed output settings open.
  8. Hold down the volume up and volume down buttons on your phone. Press them both simultaneously and hold them down for a few seconds. Wait for your phone to prompt you to use accessibility shortcuts.
  9. Tap Use Shortcut. This accessibility shortcut will allow you to disable TalkBack and continue the unlocking process.
  10. Double tap the highlighted button to confirm your selection. This will enable the accessibility shortcut that can be used to disable TalkBack.
  11. Hold down the volume up and volume down keys to disable TalkBack. Using the accessibility shortcut that you just enabled, you can turn off TalkBack now that you have access to the settings app. This will make the rest of the process much more convenient. After holding down the buttons simultaneously, you should see a notification on the bottom of your screen that tells you that TalkBack has been disabled.
  12. Click on the search button on the top right corner to open settings search. Now that you have accessed settings through TalkBack, the next step is to access the Google Chrome browser through YouTube. In order to do this, you need to first use the settings app to open YouTube.
  13. Search for YouTube and click on it to open YouTube app settings.
  14. Click on Notifications. Notification settings should be the first option in the list.
  15. Tap Additional Settings in App. This will open the main YouTube app on the phone, and from here you can open the browser app.
  16. Select About from the YouTube settings menu. The about option should be the last item on the list of settings.
  17. Tap Google Privacy Policy. This will open the Google Chrome app.
  18. Click on Accept and Continue on the welcome screen. The phone will then prompt you to sign into your Google Account.
  19. Choose No thanks. Don't sign into your google account at this time. The Chrome browser will only be used to download an app that will allow you to add your Google Account to the device.

Using the FRP Bypass App

  1. Download the FRP Bypass App. In order to bypass FRP, you will need to add your Google account to the device and use that while setting up your device.
  2. Allow Google Chrome access to photos, media, and files on your device. Because this is the first time you will have opened Google Chrome after resetting your device, you will need to give it file storage permissions before you can download a file. Click on Allow so Chrome can download the file.
  3. Tap OK on the download prompt on the bottom of your screen to initiate the download.
  4. Wait for the download to complete. Depending on the speed of your network connection, the download can take anywhere between a couple of seconds to several minutes to complete.
  5. Open the file. Tap {{MacButton|Open}] on the prompt at the bottom of the screen that notifies you that the download has completed. In case your phone does not automatically prompt you, open the context menu (the three dots icon in the top right corner of the browser) and click on downloads. Tap the download to open the file.
  6. Tap Settings on the next prompt. For your safety, the Android system blocks any app apart from the Play Store from installing apps onto your device. In order to install the FRP Bypass application, you will need to give Chrome app install permissions.
  7. Click on the switch marked Allow from this source to toggle it on .You can now install the application.
  8. Install and open the FRP Bypass app. Press the back key to navigate to the installer. Click on Install to begin the installation and wait for the app to install. Once the app is done installing, tap open to open the FRP Bypass app.
  9. Install the Google Account Manager from the FRP Bypass app. Tap on the Google Account Manager APK Install button. Select the Android 6.0 option to be taken to the app install settings screen. Once again, enable Allow from this source, press back, and install the Google Account Manager. Once the Google Account manager has finished installing, press Done to be taken back to the FRP Bypass app.
  10. Tap the FRP Bypass button. Now that you have installed Google Account Manager, you will need to add the Google Account that will be used to bypass FRP to the device.
  11. Open the browser to sign into a Google account. Select the Browser sign-in option from the FRP Bypass menu. Next, open the context menu by tapping the three dots in the top-right corner and click on Browser sign-in again. Tap on OK to be taken to a browser to sign into an account.
  12. Sign into a Google account. You could use any Google account here, it need not be the one you wish to use with this device. The purpose of this sign-in is to add the account to the device so you don't need to sign into a previously used Google account when you're setting up the device. The phone will be reset afterward, so it doesn't matter which one you use here. Just enter the details of any Google account you know, and sign in. After you sign in, you should be taken back to the FRP Bypass app.

Resetting the Device

  1. Reboot the device. Press and hold the power key and select the restart option to return to the device setup screen.
  2. Skip through all the setup screens. This setup isn't really necessary as the device will be eventually reset one final time.
  3. Verify that the Google account has been added. If you've followed all the previous steps correctly, the setup should notify you that the Google account you signed into through the FRP Bypass app has been added to your device.
  4. Skip through and deny all the remaining setup and programs till you reach the home screen. If you've done everything correctly, eventually you should have full access to the device. You're not done yet, though! To fully get rid of Factory Reset Protection, you will need to reset the phone one more time through the settings menu.
  5. Factory reset your device correctly. Open the Settings app. Tap the System menu and click on Reset options. From the list of reset options, click on Erase all data (factory reset). Enable Erase internal storage to truly restore the device to factory settings. Confirm by tapping RESET PHONE and then tapping ERASE EVERYTHING.
  6. Wait for the factory data reset to complete. This will take several minutes, so be patient! Do not interrupt the process or you might damage your phone. You will eventually be taken back to the same welcome panel that greeted you when you first booted up the device.
  7. Complete the device setup as normal. If everything has gone correctly, you should now be able to complete the device setup as if it were a new phone, without having to bother about Factory Reset Protection. The Google account you previously added to the phone will have been wiped from the device during the factory data reset, so if that was the account you wanted to use with the device, you will have to add it again during the Google account setup screen.
  8. Verify that you are able to access the home screen. After the setup, you should be taken to the device's home screen. You can now use the phone as normal.

Tips

  • Factory Reset Protection is automatically enabled the first time you secure your device with a PIN or a password. If you're considering selling your device, make sure to reset your device through the settings app instead of through recovery to avoid being bothered by FRP.
  • If you're willing to pay a small fee or don't want to go through this long process yourself, you can find several services online or offline that will disable FRP for you.

Warnings

  • Factory resetting your device is a delicate process. Before attempting it, make sure your phone has enough charge to last through the whole procedure. If your phone runs out of battery and powers off during the reset, you might run into serious issues that render your phone unusable until you flash new firmware.
  • If you're using a third party tool to bypass FRP, make sure you're downloading it from a reliable source. Because bypassing FRP through software inevitably involves adding a Google account to the device, the application or program you're using will have to be trustworthy to prevent others from potentially accessing your sensitive data.
