Crazy hair colors are becoming more and more popular. Here are some instructions and advice on how to choose your color, your location, and how to go through the process of dying your hair one of these colors.

Steps

  1. Choose a color that complements colors you wear often. This doesn't mean if you wear a lot of red you have to choose red; you could choose another color that goes well with it like orange.
  2. Decide how long you want the color to last. How long the dye lasts can range from two or so weeks to permanent (will last until your hair grows out). This also ranges on how healthy your hair is.
  3. Decide how much of your hair you would like colored and where you would like it. Some popular choices are bangs or front sections dyed, the underside of the hair, and tips. Dying all your hair could be very damaging and beware: the color may not look the same after a few weeks. Ensure that you want this color all over your hair.
  4. Buy the dye and hair bleach. These can be found at Hot Topic, Spencer's, Static, etc. Some beauty supply stores stock a few of these colors also.
  5. Make sure you have at least one pair of latex gloves. The dye, even if not permanent to hair is VERY permanent to skin and does not look pretty, especially if you are dying your hair for a special occasion.
  6. Wear work or sleeping clothes, and wrap an old towel around your shoulders just in case.
  7. Separate the sections of hair you would like to dye. The rest of the hair should be secured so that no dye accidentally gets onto it. If you are dying all of your hair, skip this step.
  8. Put on the gloves, and bleach these sections of hair. Follow all of the instructions on the box or bottle. Bleach is damaging to hair, so don't leave it in for too long or your hair will become brittle and frizzy.
  9. Rinse your hair and shampoo it, but do not use conditioner yet. Dry hair with another old towel and comb it thoroughly. If using the same gloves throughout the process, rinse them also to make sure no bleach mixes with the dye. This produces an unsatisfactory color. If not, change your gloves.
  10. Dispense a generous amount of dye onto your fingertips. Starting from the scalp down, apply the dye to the sections until they are fully saturated. Do not apply so much that it drips onto the other part of your hair. To make sure it is even, use a comb to spread it out from root (or other starting point) to tip (or other ending point).
  11. Leave in amount of time designated on the box or bottle, then rinse, and shampoo. Keep the gloves on and keep the hair and water away from the body and the rest of your hair, as it will stain.
  12. Dry and style your hair as you normally do.

Tips

  • It is also helpful to use shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair. This helps heal some of the damage and will not strip color out of hair.
  • Another tip for longer-lasting color is to not shampoo your hair immediately after dyeing. Instead, rinse extra well, and apply conditioner. After 24 hours, shampoo to remove the rest of the dye.
  • Light blond or platinum colored hair dye can be used as a less damaging alternative to bleach, but bleach produces the best color and longest dye.
  • To add more than one color, keep the sections separated so they do not touch or dye them a few days apart from one another, and use different gloves, or rinse them before applying a new color.
  • When buying colored dye, keep in mind that the color of the dye itself will be much darker than the actual result.
  • To make hair dye last longer, use a hair dryer to "bake in" the color AFTER you have left in the dye for the designated amount of time. Depending on the consistency of the dye, the hair may not completely dry during the process, but it is actually the heat that sets the color. About 5 minutes should be sufficient.
  • If you do get dye on your skin or the other sections of your hair, remove as soon as possible with the corner of a towel dipped in shampoo. It may require some serious scrubbing.
  • Use two mirrors- one in front of you and one behind you- so that you can see what you're doing if you are working behind your head. Even so, sometimes it is most helpful to have a friend do the most difficult spots. Just make sure they wear gloves!
  • Colors look best contrasted with light or dark colors. You can dye the other parts of your hair black, or use the bleach on all of your hair and only use the colors on certain parts.

Warnings

  • Only use non-metallic hair dyes. Metallic hair dyes are severely damaging and are no cheaper than a water-based dye. Make sure to read the contents label before purchase.
  • Some dyes have fumes that could cause lightheadedness. Keep the door or window open and run a fan or the a/c to make sure that the room is ventilated.
  • Some schools don't allow unnatural color in the hair. Make sure to check with your administration AND YOUR PARENTS before you dye your hair.
  • For the first few days, the dye may continue "leaking". Try not to allow wet hair to touch bed sheets or clothing, as it may permanently discolor them. You may also consider using your gloves while washing your hair during this time period.

Things You'll Need

  • A bottle of non-metallic hair dye
  • A bottle of hair bleach or very light blond hair dye
  • One or more pairs of latex gloves
  • Old clothing and two or more old towels
  • Dark colored brush or comb
  • Hair clips or hair ties to secure other sections of hair (optional)
  • Hair dryer (optional)
