How to Caulk the Shower Trim

The shower trim is the decorative part of the shower valve, tub spout and shower head that is put on after the shower surround. Once they are properly screwed into place, they need to be sealed around the edges to prevent leaks inside the wall. Caulk is used to fill up these gaps and provide a watertight seal.

  1. Wipe down the edges of the shower trim and the shower surround where they connect. Remove any moisture, dust or construction debris that may be there so the caulk can form a tight bond.
  2. Cut off the tip of the caulk tube with a utility knife. Try to make the cut in the tube the same size as the gap between the edge of the trim and the shower surround and do your best to make the cut at a 45-degree angle.
  3. Insert the tip of the caulk tube into the end of the caulk gun.
  4. Insert the plunger into the back of the caulk tube and tighten it down.
  5. Hold the caulk tube at a 45-degree angle to the trim and squeeze a thin, continuous line of caulk around the edges of the shower trim where they connect with the shower surround. As you squeeze out the caulk, pull the tube toward you gently until you’ve made your way all the way around the trim.
  6. Wet down your index finger and smooth the caulk into place around the trim so it seals tightly.
  7. Let the caulk dry for 24 hours before running water in the shower.

  • Be sure to get a caulk that is made for wet areas such as latex or silicone for the best results.
  • Get a caulk that is the same color and texture as the grout in the bathroom for the least obtrusive appearance.

  • Exerting too much pressure on the caulk gun or end of the caulk tube can result in too much caulk coming out of the end of the tube. If this happens, use your index finger to smooth as much of it as possible into place, then use a wet paper towel to clean up the rest before it dries.
