If you feel a pimple pop up, you might be feeling like your day is going to be ruined. Inflamed pimples can cause you to feel a little self-conscious and they might even hurt a bit. No one likes to deal with zits. You're probably in a rush to cover it up as fast as possible, but take a beat. Both medical and beauty experts recommend letting it heal before covering it with makeup. If you can take the time to do that, awesome! But if you have a big job interview or an important social event, you might feel like you have no choice. Don’t worry. You can use light makeup to reduce the redness. Just make sure to treat the pimple so it starts to heal.

Using Makeup to Conceal Pimples

  1. Soothe the skin with ice or cold water to reduce swelling. Your first order of business is to get the swelling to stop. When you have a swollen bump, applying cold can help calm your skin. Before you start putting on makeup, hold an ice cube to your pimple for 1-2 minutes. Make sure to wrap it in a washcloth before holding it to your skin. Putting ice directly on your skin can be a little painful. You can also splash it with very cold water if that works better for you. This will help reduce inflammation, making it easier to cover up the blemish.
    • It’s normal if you’re stressing about a zit. But take a deep breath try to keep your cool. You don’t want to make the rest of your skin appear flushed.
  2. Use a color corrector to disguise a zit. Color correctors are a type of concealer that are tinted a specific color, typically green or yellow. If you’ve never used one before, it might seem like a strange product to use to try to cover up a blemish. But color correctors are actually great to use in addition to concealer, or even on their own. Start with a very small amount and use a clean finger or small brush to apply it to the red spot. Blend outwards, using very light pressure until you have the red area covered.
    • You can add more product if you need it, but it’s always easier to add more rather than try to remove excess makeup. That’s why it’s a good idea to start small.
  3. Apply eyeshadow primer to help your makeup stick. This trick is a game-changer, especially in those hot summer months when your skin might be sweaty or sticky. Eyeshadow primer helps your eye makeup stay put for hours and it can do the same for your concealer or foundation, too. Grab some primer from the drugstore and use the small brush that's included to dot the primer on your pimple. Use your ring finger to lightly blend the primer outwards from the center of your red spot.
    • Follow up with a concealer, foundation, or BB cream to complete your look.
  4. Cover the blemish with a lightweight foundation or BB cream. Pick a product that matches your skin tone for the most natural results and dab a few drops of foundation on a clean finger, makeup sponge, or brush. Gently dab the makeup onto the zit, then smooth it out until you can't see that red spot anymore. You can either cover your whole face or just the red spot.
    • Use your fingers, a brush, or makeup sponge to spread an even layer across your face. When you're done, blend around the edges of your face to make sure to avoid awkward makeup lines. A mini beauty blender is an inexpensive tool that makes this part a breeze!
    • Look for products labeled "lightweight" or "sheer coverage". Lighter formulas won't feel as greasy or heavy on your skin, which is exactly what you want when you're trying to heal a tricky spot!
    • Choose makeup that matches your skin tone and type. You can test makeup on your hand to see if it will blend well with your skin color. If you have dry skin, look for products that moisturize as well as cover. For oily skin, always go with a lightweight product.
    • Always take a minute to wash your hands after you put your makeup on. And give those brushes a quick wash with gentle soap and warm water about once a week or so.
  5. Use powder to set your makeup and finish your look. Powder helps keep everything in place. If you have oily skin, it can basically be your best friend. Dip a clean makeup brush in the powder and then press it gently onto the pimple. Then roll the brush outwards from the center of the zit, spreading the powder to cover the rest of the area.
    • If you like the matte look that powder offers, go ahead and use this technique to apply to your whole face.
  6. Dab concealer on the center of the pimple for the simplest option. Concealer is a great choice if you want coverage for just that one spot. This step requires a little extra time, but it will be worth it. Place a drop of a lightweight concealer on a small makeup brush. A clean lip brush works great. Tap the brush gently on the center of the pimple and let the concealer sit for 15 minutes. It will work better if it dries.
    • After 15 minutes, softly blend the concealer out from the center of the pimple with your finger or brush so that the entire red area is covered.

Treating Your Pimple

  1. Remove your makeup at the end of each day. This is the easiest way to help your skin stay healthy and to quickly clear up any blemishes.Use a gentle makeup remover, like wipes that you can gently rub over your skin. Other removers come in a bottle and you can use them just like you would use a cleanser. In fact, if you don't like to use too many products, you can also simply rub a small amount of a gentle cleanser onto your face and then rinse with warm water. Make sure to use a clean towel to pat your face dry.
    • Wash your face twice a day. This is a good rule of thumb to follow even when you’re not dealing with a breakout. Use a gentle cleanser in the morning and in the evening.
  2. Use a topical spot treatment to help your skin heal. These over the counter medications can help reduce redness and swelling. In the skincare aisle, look for a gel or cream that contains benzoyl peroxide. Use your finger to dab the gel, cream, or liquid onto blemishes. Depending on what product your buy, you might just leave it on overnight or you might need to wash it off after several minutes.
    • Make sure to carefully follow the instructions on the packaging. It’s always best to use any kind of medication exactly as you’re supposed to.
    • If you think you need something stronger, talk to your doctor about a prescription retinoid medication.
  3. Dab on hydrocortisone cream to reduce redness. Odds are good that you already have one of these anti-itch products in your medicine cabinet. Good news. It can help you get rid of your zit quickly. Place a small dot on the pimple before bed and again first thing in the morning. You might not have clear skin immediately, but it will typically clear up in a day or two.
  4. Try tea tree oil for a more natural option. If you're hesitant to use benzoyl peroxide, or just don't have any on hand, tea tree oil is a great substitute. Dampen a cotton ball with a little oil and hold it to your skin for a few seconds. There's no need to rinse it off. Tea tree oil can dry up your skin a bit, which helps to shrink the zit.
    • Bonus! Adding tea tree oil to your skincare routine can help prevent pimples. Just blot some on your face after washing it.
  5. Allow your pimple to heal before covering it with makeup. This might be really hard, but it’s the best way to get rid of your pimple. Try to be patient and allow your skin several days or even a week to heal. During this time, avoid wearing makeup, wash your face twice a day, and use any over the counter treatments that you’ve picked up.
    • Avoid squeezing the pimple. This often makes the inflammation even worse and could even lead to scarring. While it’s tempting to try to squeeze your zit away, experts say you should resist the urge.
    • See a doctor if your skin causes you a lot of stress. You don’t have to deal with this on your own. Reach out to a professional to help you get your skin looking the way you want.
  6. Reduce your stress to prevent future breakouts. There are lots of factors that cause breakouts, including hormones and your environment. While you can't do much about those things, you can try to relax a bit. Stress can also cause breakouts, so make it a point to try to chill out a bit. This might mean trying something like yoga, or even just making it a point to do something you like each day.
    • If you feel yourself stressing, take a walk, text a friend, or find something funny to watch. You'll be doing yourself and your skin a favor.
