Empty candle jars need not be simply discarded nor even recycled. Consider instead the many possibilities available for repurposing such a jar––why, you might even take up candle making and use it for the very same purpose again! Find below a range of cool ways to make use of that candle jar beyond its present life.

Removing an Unwanted Candle

  1. Put the candle in a double boiler. Add water to the base section, then heat it. Melt the wax.
  2. Once the wax is melted, remove the top pan from the heat and turn off the heat source. Fish out the wick, being careful not to burn yourself. Then either:
    • Pour the wax into a candle mold for reusing the wax; or
    • Pour the melted wax into a disposable container such as a margarine container or onto a thick wad of newspaper. Let it cool, then discard in the garbage can.
  3. Peel off the label using hot water. Make sure that there is no sticky glue left.
  4. Wash the jar in warm soapy water. Dry completely.
  5. Use as needed. The candle jar is now clean and ready for reuse, either for making more candles or for other purposes, such as a vase or storing bits and pieces inside.

Brush Organizer

  1. Clean the jar as per "Removing an unwanted candle" above.
  2. Add a label to the outside of the jar. Title it: "Makeup Brushes" or something similar.
    • To make your brush jar cuter, add a little chalkboard label and fill the jar with little beads to help the brushes stay upright.
  3. Put your makeup brushes into the jar. Place where it's easy to get at when applying your makeup.

Tool Storage

  1. Clean the jar as per "Removing an unwanted candle" above.
  2. Fill the clean jar with nuts, bolts, screws or any other little parts you have laying around.
  3. Place in the workshop or craft zone for use as needed.

Tips

  • If the label is sticky, use orange oil or an essential oil such as eucalyptus or tea tree oil to lift off the stickiness. If you have sensitive skin, wear gloves while doing this.

Warnings

  • Use appropriate caution when using heat to remove candle wax from a jar.
  • If reusing the wax to make a new candle from, be aware that reconstituted candles can often have a more intense flame, so be sure to light well away from flammable items and keep it burning in a safe place.

  • Safe container for pouring unwanted wax into (metallic, ceramic, an old tin/can)
