A DVD can be created, or burned, from files that contain an ISO (also known as a disc image) extension using the Windows Disc Image Burner application built into Windows 7 operating systems. A single ISO file has the ability to capture the contents of an entire DVD and can be burned to any recordable DVD; however, your current disc burning hardware must be able to support the procedure based on its features. Continue reading to learn how you can create or burn an ISO file to a DVD in Windows 7.

Steps

  1. Consult the manual for your disc burner hardware or contact the manufacturer directly to determine the capabilities of your disc burner and types of discs it can burn.
  2. Insert a blank, recordable DVD into your disc burner drive.
  3. Click on the "Start" menu in the lower-left of your computer screen and select "Computer."
  4. Navigate to the ISO file you want to burn and open the file by double-clicking on it or by right-clicking and selecting "Open" to launch the Windows Disc Image Burner.
    • You may also right-click on the ISO file and select "Burn disc image."
    • If another program on your computer has automatically associated itself with the ISO file, right-click on the ISO once again and click on "Open With" to designate Windows Disc Image Burner as your desired application.
  5. Verify that the correct disc burner drive is shown in the drop-down menu next to the "Disc burner" field if you have more than one burner.
  6. Click on the arrow within the drop-down menu to choose a different disc burner drive if necessary.
    • Place a check mark next to "Verify disc after burning" if you want Windows to notify you that the disc burning process was successful.
    • Selecting the verification option may add additional time to the disc burning process.
  7. Click on the "Burn" button to begin the disc burning process.
  8. Click on the "Close" button after your ISO file has finished burning to the DVD to close the Windows Disc Image Burner application.
  9. Safely remove the new, burned DVD from your disc burner drive and store.

Tips

  • Any ISO files that you have burned to a DVD in Windows 7 can also be played on a Macintosh computer. ISO files are written in a cross-platform format, making them compatible with any computer operating system.
  • There is third-party software available on the Internet that will allow you to burn ISO DVD files to mobile devices such as iPhones, iPads, and more.
  • Take advantage of the Windows Disc Image Burner application in Windows 7 to download and use ISO files from websites to obtain important software updates for your computer.

Warnings

  • DVDs that have been burned from ISO files can currently only be played and viewed from a computer.
  • Windows Disc Image Burner does not have the ability to create ISO files saved to a DVD. To create ISO files, you may need to install or use a third-party application that allows you to copy or burn ISO files from a DVD.
