Dirty headphones can be a source of poor performance and bad listening quality. They might also harbor germs. At the very least, they look grubby. Here are some ways to clean them.

Cleaning with Soapy Water

  1. Unplug the headphones from whatever device they've been attached to. Do not attempt to clean attached headphones; there is a risk of electrical shock or breakage.
  2. Gather some warm water, a little dish washing liquid (as gentle a detergent as possible), a spray bottle and a soft cloth or rag.
  3. Mix the water with one drop of dish washing liquid. Stir thoroughly.
  4. Pour the soapy liquid into a spray bottle.
  5. Place the headphones on a clean surface. Spray the cleaning cloth with the cleaning solution. Then rub the headphones with the dampened (not wet) cleaning cloth or rag.
    • Apply a little pressure on dirty spots, to rub them away.
    • Tougher spots can be treated with a little rubbing alcohol, but only if needed.
  6. Wipe the soapy water residue off with a clean cloth or paper towel. Allow to dry.
    • It is important to wipe off the soapy water immediately, to prevent a film from forming or to avoid causing any water damage.
  7. Done. The headphones should be nice and clean again.

Cleaning earbuds

  1. Unplug the earbuds from your device.
  2. Wet a cotton ball with rubbing alcohol.
  3. Gently rub the cotton ball on the earbuds. Pay particular attention to dirtier spots.
    • A dry toothbrush can be used on the holes, to remove any gunky build-up.
  4. Allow the earbuds to dry completely before your next use.

Tips

  • With some brands, you can remove the fine mesh portion of the earphones or earbuds, for a deeper clean. If you wish to do so, read the manufacturer's instructions carefully or check their website for more details. You must be certain it is both recommended and possible to remove the mesh parts and that it will be easy to put them back in place.
  • Repeat cleaning on a regular basis, to keep the headphones in top shape. Quick cleans can be done using alcohol-soaked wipes that are usually found in first-aid kits.
  • Baby detergent can be substituted for dish washing detergent.
  • Earphones and earbuds can be kept cleaner with proper storage. Keep headphones inside a protective case when not in use and keep earbuds in a suitable bag or pocket to protect them from rubbing, etc.
  • Tape can be used to pick up a range of fluff on parts of headphones. Simply stick on, then pull off, collecting dirt, skin dander, hair and fluff. Use less sticky tape for parts of the headphones that might tear.
  • Ear pads (the soft foamy part of large headphones), if removable, can be hand washed in either a mild soapy wash or a wool wash. Lay them on an insect or mesh screen to dry, allowing plenty of airflow. They will likely take about a day to dry thoroughly before you can place them back on the headphones.

Warnings

  • Never place the attachment end of the headphones into water or liquid of any sort. If this end accidentally gets wet, ensure that it is thoroughly dry before reinserting into your player device.
  • Never wet headphones or immerse them in water. Only use dampened cloths or rubbing rags/cotton balls, nothing wet.
  • Read the manufacturer's instructions. Follow cleaning instructions provided with great care; sometimes not doing so may void the warranty should anything go wrong with your cleaning attempts.
