Vietnamese mint (Persicaria odorata, Polygonum odoratum) is a perennial herb that has a delicious flavour and mild fragrance. It is easy to grow in the garden or in a container. Since it's a tropical herb, you'll need a warm enough climate to coax its growth, along with a plentiful water supply.

Steps

  1. Take a cutting or purchase seeds or a seedling from the local nursery.
    • If you take a cutting, choose one with a lot of roots on it. This can be planted straight into the garden as they root extremely easily.
  2. Prepare the soil. Vietnamese mint will grow best in well-draining, fertile soil that stays moist. Add some well-rotted manure or compost to enrich the soil if needed. Choose an area with bright dappled shade, and where it will definitely get shade during the hottest part of the day.
  3. Plant early spring or during the wet season. The mint needs lots of water to establish well.
    • This plant grows fast so you might want to consider containing it within a container.
  4. Water well and frequently. Remember that it's tropical, so it needs a wet season, or a simulation of one.
  5. Fertilise. A soluble fertiliser with a high proportion of nitrogen or a complete plant food is ideal, given occasionally during the spring and summer months.
  6. Prune regularly. Vietnamese mint grows rapidly and is ready for harvesting within a month, so it needs to be pruned regularly to keep its rampant growth in check.
  7. Harvest. The leaves are best between spring and autumn but can be harvested all year. Harvesting can begin about 4-6 weeks after the initial planting.
  8. Use. Vietnamese mint is excellent washed, chopped, and added to salads and Thai and Vietnamese dishes. It's a far more authentic addition to cold/fresh spring rolls than common mint. It is best used fresh.

Tips

  • This mint will not freeze successfully.
  • Ample access to water at all times will ensure fastest growth.
  • This mint is a good guide to the moisture state of the surrounding garden. The moment it wilts, watering is definitely required for the garden as a whole.

Warnings

  • This plant has the potential to become a weed very easily if not carefully controlled.
  • Vietnamese mint does not grow in areas with temperatures below freezing.

Things You'll Need

  • Cutting or seedling
  • Suitable growing space or container
  • Digging tools
  • Fertiliser
  • Frequent water supply
