Fleece is a popular bedding alternative because it is reusable and cheaper to maintain. It is also easier and quicker to clean in comparison to wood shavings, which can get messy. To make the switch, start by choosing the right fleece liner for your cage and looking for a high-quality material.

Steps

  1. Know when to make the switch. Fleece bedding is known to be more economic and less messy because it is reusable and can be washed multiple times. However, fleece can also be difficult to maintain and keep clean. Be prepared to spot-clean the cage at least once a day and perform a deep clean every week.
  2. Find a good-quality fleece blanket. Look for fleece that is made of 100% polyester. The most common fleece used in cages is polar fleece. If your fleece is not polyester based it will not wick away urine, but repel it, leaving it to sit on top of your bedding.
    • Vet bed, also known as dry bed, is recommended by veterinarians and exotic experts. These products are easier to keep track of stools, and due to their high-quality, they're more absorbent and last longer than other fleece blankets.
    • Purchase a fleece blanket or vet bed that matches the size of your cage. Vet bed is generally sold in sizes that suit C & C cages (such as a 2 x 4 cage) and lofts. Measure the size of your cage to ensure you purchase the correct size fleece.
  3. Wash your fleece before use. To achieve the best use of your fleece bedding, it's important to wash the material 2-3 times before use to break down the water barer that is in place when it is brand new. If you do not wash the blanket, it will have the tendency to repel the urine, leaving it to sit on top instead of wicking it away.
    • Wash your fleece 2-3 times in warm water with regular detergent. Do not use fabric softeners or similar products when either washing or drying, as this will put the water barer back into effect.
  4. Line your cage with an under bedding. If you do not have an under bedding, the fleece will not be as effective. The purpose of under bedding is to catch moisture from underneath as the fleece wicks it away. Towels, puppy pads, and newspaper are popular choices for under bedding.
  5. Spot-clean the cage on a daily basis. To ensure your fleece lasts longer between washes, spot-clean the cage each day by removing droppings, hay, and food on the surface of the cage.
    • You can also replace some fleece blankets that get more dirty than others, such as under where the hide's are positioned.
  6. Wash and replace your fleece every week. Droppings can accumulate fast, so it's recommended to replace your fleece once a week at minimum.
    • Begin by scooping up all the droppings, hay, and food debris. Shake out and use a curry comb to remove loose hair. Place the fleece in your washing machine and apply warm water and detergent or white vinegar to remove bacteria and odour.
    • Do not use softener or any similar products on your fleece while washing or drying, as this will put the water barer back into effect.

Tips

  • Vet bed is recommended for guinea pigs with medical conditions or that are ill, because the material is easier to keep track of urine and loose stools.
  • Use a vacuum cleaner or lint roller to get rid of excess hair on your fleece before washing.

Warnings

  • Do not use softener or any similar products on your fleece while washing or drying, as this will put the water barer back into effect.
