If you want to listen to music, watch funny videos, or find new content creators, YouTube is the app to download. Whether you’re using an iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Apple TV, the YouTube app is easy to get—and the best part is that it’s totally free! If you’ve never used YouTube before, spend some time exploring the app and figuring out its features to get the most out of your new video player.

Downloading the YouTube App

  1. Update your device to iOS 11.0 or later. Whether you’re using an iPhone, iPad, iPod, or Apple TV, you’ll have to be using iOS 11.0. If your device is updated to the latest iOS, you should have no problem downloading the YouTube app. Head to your Settings, then Software Update to see if you need one.
    • Your device may update your iOS automatically, so you might be good to go!
  2. Open up the App store. It looks like a blue square with the letter “A” in the middle of it. If you’re on a mobile device, tap on the app with your finger or stylus. If you’re using an Apple TV, navigate to the app with your remote.
    • Depending on your device, your app store might be in a folder somewhere. If you can’t find it, use your device’s search program to look for it.
  3. Search for “YouTube” in the search bar. Tap the search tab at the bottom right that has a magnifying glass on it, then tap on the search bar at the top of the screen. Use the on-screen keyboard to type “YouTube” into the search bar to find the app you’re looking for.
  4. Tap Get under the YouTube app. The YouTube app is called “YouTube,” and it looks like a white square with a red play button. Tap the “Get” button to start the downloading process for your YouTube app.
    • The YouTube app is made by Google LLC.
    • If you’ve had YouTube downloaded before, there will be a small cloud button instead of the “Get” button. You can tap on it to start your download.
  5. Click Open when the download is complete. Now you can search for new music, your favorite content creator, and more! Click Open or find the app on your home screen to start using your YouTube app.
    • Now you’ve downloaded your YouTube app!

Using the YouTube App

  1. Sign into your account to personalize your recommendations. If you have a YouTube account already, you can use your email address and password to log into the app. This will give you recommendations based on your subscriber list and what you’ve watched previously. Hit Account then Sign In on the upper right hand corner of the screen.
    • If you don’t have an account, you can make one right on the app.
  2. Search for videos at the top of the screen. If you know what you want to watch already, you don’t have to waste time scrolling through the home screen. Tap or select the magnifying glass at the top of the screen, then use the keyboard to enter in the key words. When you’re finished, hit “search” in the bottom right.
    • YouTube will save your searches and recommend similar videos.
  3. Click the bottom right screen to expand to full screen. When you play a video, it will automatically start playing at a tiny size, leaving the recommended videos and comments at the bottom. To make your video play full screen, hit the square button in the bottom right hand corner of the video to expand it.
    • If you’re using your phone, you can just tilt your phone to landscape mode to expand the video. Make sure your rotation lock is off first, though.
  4. Double tap the right or left side to fast forward or rewind. If you missed the last part of a video or you want to skip ahead, position your finger on the right side of the video and double tap it to fast forward by 10 seconds. If you want to rewind, put your finger on the left side of the video and double tap to rewind by 10 seconds.
    • If you’re using YouTube on your Apple TV, you’ll have to navigate your remote to the bar on the bottom of the screen to fast forward or rewind.
  5. Enable captions on videos by pressing “More.” Click on the video you want to watch, then tap the 3 dots in the top right corner. Scroll to the tab that says “Captions,” then select the language you’d like to see on the screen.
    • Most YouTube captions are computer-generated, so they don’t always get everything right.

Tips

  • If you’ve never used the YouTube app, spend some time exploring it to get a feel for it.
