Not all of us are the star student that gets the lead role in the school play. And not all of us can jump into a new persona with as much ease as buttoning your shirt every morning. But having a small role doesn't mean you have to be overlooked by the audience! Here are a few tips.

Steps

  1. Always stay in character! Like it or not, if you're on stage, somebody in the crowd will be watching you at all times. If you're playing a hobo, don't straighten your hair every ten seconds. Likewise, if you're playing someone rich, don't slouch in your seat. If there is action on the opposite side of the stage, and someone's eyes stray over to you only to see you dozing off, you can bet they won't notice you again.
  2. Listen to your director. Even if you completely disagree with their advice, the director is always right. Their job is to look at the whole stage and decide what looks and doesn't look right. So be sure to listen to their instructions, and be sure not to forget any instructions either. Nothing bugs a director more than having to tell the same person the same thing for the third time.
  3. Speak up! Even if you have a single line in the entire three-hour production, you may as well not be in the play if no one can hear your line. And if you're in a musical, don't be afraid to sing loud, even if you're not the best singer in the world. If you make yourself heard, your singing director will be able to hear you to sort out problems with your voice. And if you have a great voice, all the more reason to sing it out! The same goes for your body language. If everyone else is snapping with their hands high above their heads, and your hands are hovering around eye level, you bet people will be able to pick you out as an amateur.
  4. If you mess up, don't let it show. Even in rehearsals, it is much more professional to just keep on trucking than to smack your forehead and apologize to your director a million times. In most cases, the audience won't notice that you made a mistake, if you can cover it well enough. There have been entire monologues skipped without a beat, but the performance was still phenomenal.

Tips

  • Don't rush your lines, and make sure you pronounce all the consonants with emphasis. When you're on stage, you're a lot harder to understand than when you're talking face to face with someone. Plus, if they miss your line, they miss it.
  • Have good posture. Don't slouch when you sit, and hold your head high.
  • Smile! Most plays have at least one happy part, and if you're a stoic, people will pass their eyes over you without a second thought.
  • NEVER turn your back on the audience unless the situation requires it. No one likes to look at the back of your head.

Warnings

  • Don't overdo it.
