Movies that are mainly marketed to kids can look boring, but they are actually very entertaining once you learn how to appreciate them. Here are some tips to help you enjoy a movie that your whole family can watch together.

Steps

  1. Get familiar with kids' movies both new and old. Look up online kids' movies that are currently popular or have been popular in years past, then rent a couple of them to watch.
  2. Take note of things that stick out to you. Listen to the dialogue, pay attention to the imagery, and listen to the music closely. Also take note of special effects and editing. Kids' movies can bear some great music and special effects! Computer-animated movies often try to look as realistic as possible, so this is another thing to pay attention to.
  3. Pay close attention to the plot. Kids' movies will often intertwine themes that older teens and adults can understand in an actual effort to make the movie something everyone can enjoy. Examples of movies that have both themes for children and adults include (with their possible lessons and themes):
    • WALL-E - This movie's main themes are love and the environment, but also alludes to friendship and hard work.
    • The Sandlot - The main theme of this movie is camaraderie and the importance of friendship. If you're a baseball fan you will appreciate this film even more since it centers around friends who spend their days playing baseball.
    • The Polar Express - This film expands upon the story of the book on which it was based. It's main theme is Christmas and belief in the true spirit of Christmas.
  4. Always look for "the moral of the story." Just about every movie that is made for kids has a moral, something that the kids can learn to. Pay attention to this! Often, both the young and the young-at-heart can learn from this!
  5. Look out for hidden humor. Companies like Disney and Dreamworks understand that adults will be seeing the film with their children. They will try to put in an element only an adult will understand that will go completely over your kids' heads. Watch out for the comic relief (characters like Hamm from Toy Story and Donkey from Shrek) and the "innuendos" that Hollywood can get away with. Kids' films are funnier than you think!

Tips

  • If you see a trailer for a new kids' movie, and you have a couple of hours to kill sometime, go out and see the movie. Since you've now learned to appreciate kids' movies, you just might have a new favorite on your hands.
  • If you watch the movie with a kid, try discussing the movie afterward. The kid just might have some insight on something you completely overlooked!

Things You'll Need

  • Copies of kids' movies
  • A VCR, DVD, or Blu-Ray player
