Are you a revert or new Muslim? Are you unsure about what to do now? It can be a little bit daunting following a new religion, but there's nothing to worry about once you learn the basics.

Steps

  1. Say the shahada. To become a Muslim one needs to say, ash hadu an la ilaha illallah, wa ash hadu anna Muhammadur rasoolullah, which means, "I testify that there is no god but the God, and I testify that Muhammad is His messenger." If you want to be a Muslim, you need to say this sincerely from the bottom of your heart.
  2. Learn Arabic. This is the language of the book of Allah, the Qur'an. Reading the Qur'an is necessary and every Muslim must have the Qur'an in their heart. You will need to learn how to read the Qur'an, starting from the basic Arabic alphabet, vowels, word structures and elocution rules, then practicing reading short chapters of the Qur'an.
  3. Learn more. Go to lectures in your local mosque, or attend seminars at centers. Try to attend the Jumu'ah prayer every Friday, and arrive early so that you can listen to the khutbah (public preaching). This is a time when the community is together and you should take every advantage you get to go.
  4. Beware of the media. Lots of lies and false accusations spread through the media and through negative, one-sided portrayals of Islam. Learn that Islam isn't a bad religion and that certain so-called Muslims want to create division and disunity in the world.
  5. Find other new Muslim friends. Having good company is encouraged to increase your worship. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "On the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will proclaim: “Where are those who have mutual love for My Glory’s sake? Today I shall shelter them in My shade where there is no shade but Mine." Having Muslim friends who are in the same boat as you can make the whole process of being a new Muslim less scary and you can feel comfortable knowing that there are other people who are just as nervous as you. Remember, don't be afraid to ask any questions if you're unsure about something!
  6. Understand that there will be hardships. Everyone will have some sort of problem during their life, and you are no exception. But how you deal with such hardships is the main deal. Ending up depressed and locking yourself in a room will only worsen the situation; instead, seek help in your Lord who is with those that are patient. The Prophet said, "So know that victory is with patience, and relief is with distress and that with hardship comes ease."

Tips

  • Disassociate yourself from the terrible people claiming to be Muslims who commit heinous acts of terrorism and cowardice across the world.
  • Do not be ashamed of your identity. Wearing Islamic clothing, greeting a fellow Muslim in Arabic, and attending Islamic lectures shouldn't make you feel ashamed. Be proud of Islam.
  • You can still have non-Muslim friends so do not severe ties with them. They may be guided too one day.
  • Integrate yourself into the community. Just because you are a Muslim, doesn't mean you cannot be sociable. Be proud of a diverse community and bring people of different faiths, religions and cultures together. Remember, there's more that unites us than divides us.
