If you like to reduce landfill waste by drinking from reusable water bottles, you may have accumulated many them over the years. Especially if you live with a large number of people, your water bottle collection may feel like it’s outgrowing your kitchen space. Fortunately, you can use containers and racks, as well as some tips for creating space on shelves and in drawers, to give your bottles and your kitchen the organization they need.

Sorting Through Your Bottles

  1. Dispose of bottles that leak or smell to make more room. Check your water bottle collection carefully. Put some water in each bottle and take a drink from it. If the bottle smells weird as you bring it toward your face, or if any water at all leaks out, get rid of it. Call a recycling agency in your area to see if they accept the material that your bottle is made from, or throw it away if they don't.
  2. Determine how many bottles you need for the number of people in your family. If you have a large family, you may want to limit the number of bottles down to what each person absolutely needs, or 2 bottles per person. This will allow them to use 1 bottle while the other bottle is being washed.
    • If 2 bottles per person seems like not enough, you can decide on an appropriate number for your family.
  3. Donate extra or duplicate water bottles. You may have tons of bottles and don't need to keep them all. Or, you may have some bottles that are all from the same charity event that your family doesn’t use because they get them mixed up.
    • Try purging any water bottles that don’t get used within a week from your home, and keep only the ones that are regularly used.

Using Containers and Racks

  1. Buy plastic baskets to keep bottles from falling over. Obtain some 11 × 8 × 4 in (28 × 20 × 10 cm) plastic baskets from a dollar store or department store. You can often find these for only a couple dollars a piece. Arrange your water bottles so they’re standing up inside the baskets, and place the baskets in a cabinet or on your countertop.
    • If you’re not a huge fan of plastic baskets, you can find wicker storage baskets of a similar size to use in the same way; wicker will cost a bit more per basket than plastic.
  2. Try a hanging pocketed shoe-rack to hide bottles behind a door. The pocketed racks that you hang behind doors for shoes can work perfectly for water bottles. Just hang the rack behind a pantry or closet door and place a water bottle in each pocket.
    • You can get either the ones with clear plastic pockets, or ones made from solid fabric, depending on your preference.
    • Find hanging pocketed shoe-racks in department stores or online.
  3. Get stackable wine racks to stack bottles lying down. A popular way to store water bottles is in plain plastic wine racks. You can buy stackable wine racks in sets of 3, with each rack holding 3 bottles, and you have an instant storage idea for 9 water bottles.
    • Place your stackable wine racks with your water bottles in a cabinet, on a shelf, or on your kitchen counters.
    • For an extra organized arrangement, designate 1 rack for each person in your home to store their 3 favorite water bottles.
  4. Use magazine racks to store bottles anywhere. A plastic or wooden magazine rack turned on its side also makes a nice place to stack water bottles. Turn the rack so its tallest side is lying down, and stack 3 lying down water bottles inside it.
    • Place your water bottle magazine racks on your kitchen counters or inside cabinets to keep them organized and out of your way.
  5. Try wire racks to keep bottles separated and standing up. Obtain some hanging wire racks designed for closets or bathroom areas. Install them inside a pantry or closet door using any hardware that comes with them, and fill them with water bottles standing up, similarly to how you would arrange them inside a basket.
    • Hanging wire bins for closets or bathrooms can be purchased in department stores or online.

Making Space on Shelves and in Drawers

  1. Clear out 1 or 2 shelves if you have lots of bottles. If family has and uses lots of water bottles, try removing all other items from 1 or 2 shelves in your kitchen cabinets. Place your water bottles on those shelves only, either standing by standing them up on their own or by using a container technique.
  2. Use an empty drawer to arrange bottles standing up. If your kitchen has drawers, try removing all other items from one of them to designate a home for your water bottles. You can arrange them lying down inside the drawer.
    • If your drawer is fairly deep, you can also store the bottles standing up inside it.
  3. Install drawer dividers in a large drawer to store rows of bottles. If you have a large kitchen drawer inside a lower cabinet, cut 4-5 1 ft × 4 ft (0.30 m × 1.22 m) pieces of wooden board as long as they need to be in order to fit the depth of your drawer. Use a nail gun and wood glue to secure each board standing up on its narrow side, in place inside the drawer.
    • Evenly space the wooden boards so that you create 5-6 rows inside your drawer before starting to nail or glue them down.
    • Use each row to place water bottles standing up. Try designating a row to each person in your household.

Tips

  • Consider taking your unused water bottles to thrift stores or charity organizations when you are reducing the number of water bottles in your home. As long as the bottles work well and are in good condition, donating them is a better alternative than throwing them in the trash.
