Guinea pig treats that are both tasty and nutritional can be made at home from simple guinea-pig friendly ingredients. If you have vegetables in the kitchen, it's probable that you don't even need to make a special trip to get the needed ingredients. These nutritious treats will be much enjoyed by your guinea pig.

Celery and Carrot Crunches

  1. Gather a celery stalk and a carrot. The celery stalk should be twice as long or longer than the carrot. Take some celery leaves off the stalk to make it tastier for the guinea pig.
    • Remove the celery veins; these can present a choking hazard.
  2. Slide the carrot inside the celery stick. Break or cut the celery in half, and slide the carrots in one of the halves. Then put the other carrot on top of the enfolded carrots to make a capsule-like treat, covering the carrots inside.
  3. Put some leaves under the carrot to make it tastier. Some guinea pigs like the leaves, some like the stalks, others like both. You'll discover this by watching your own guinea pig as it eats. Put as much variety in the treat as you can.
  4. Serve. Watch your guinea pig munch away on this treat. Success!

Extra Tasty Fruit Salad

  1. Gather all of the fruit you can. This includes apples, oranges, strawberries, and so forth. If you want, get some lettuce as well.
  2. Cut the fruit into small pieces.
  3. Mix the fruit pieces together. Try not to mash the pieces together, or it won't taste as good for the guinea pig.
  4. Add some freshly squeezed orange juice and/or apple juice as dressing. You may have already put some apples and oranges in your salad, but this will help bring out the flavor. This step is optional.
    • Note: By natural, this mean squeezing the juice straight out of the orange or apple. Do not use the orange juice or apple juice you would usually drink.
  5. Serve the fruit salad to your guinea pig and watch your guinea pig enjoy.

Vegetable Fiesta

  1. Gather as many vegetables as you can. You can use peppers, tomatoes, celery, carrots, and so on. This will be best with lettuce included.
  2. Cut the vegetables into little pieces.
  3. Mix the vegetables together. Do not mash. Smoothly mix the vegetables together.
  4. Give it to your guinea pig. This one isn't very complicated, it is just a vegetable salad!

Tips

  • Go easy on the apples and oranges. Too many of these can be harmful to your guinea pig.
  • If your guinea pig generally doesn't like one of the things in a recipe, it would be easier to leave it out.
  • Don't go all out with any of these foods; an overweight guinea pig is unhealthy.

Warnings

  • When giving vegetables, leave out potatoes and avocados. These can seriously hurt your guinea pig.
  • If you're giving a guinea pig broccoli, cabbage, bell peppers (capsicums) or Brussels sprouts, don't give it too much. These vegetables can cause constipation and gas.
  • Do not feed a guinea pig chiles, coconut, garlic, iceberg lettuce, rhubarb or tomato leaves. These foods are either dangerous for a guinea pig or nutritionally deficient.
  • Apple seeds are poisonous, always remove these before feeding apple to a guinea pig.
