When this project is done, you will have your own one-piece telephone that will plug into any wall jack in the United States, plus an alligator clip adapter (to make your phone calls even if you can't find a jack).

Steps

  1. Find a non-wireless telephone that has a cord and buttons on the handset. Have a telephone wire crimper handy.
  2. Unplug the headset from the base unit (which sits on the counter or hangs on the wall) and remove the small telephone plug (RJ11-connector) from the end of the wire that goes into the base unit.
  3. Strip the wire on the same end, so that it will go into a telephone wall jack.
  4. Use the same size (RJ11-connector) that goes into the wall and lightly crimp it on the end you stripped. Before crimping fully, plug the phone in and check for a dial tone. If you get a dial tone, crimp the (RJ11-connector) tightly.
  5. Find an extra telephone cord (the cable that connects the phone to the wall) down to the red and green wires. Solder the alligator clips onto the wires.
  6. If everything was done correctly, you will be able to plug the one-piece phone into any wall jack anywhere in the U.S. and dial out (on a working line). If there is no jack, the alligator clips will connect to the same color wires and dial out as well.

Tips

  • Similar devices have been used by "phone phreaks" (like computer crackers, except their interest is in the telephone system rather than computer networks) since at least the early 1980s, and have been called many names including "beige box", "bud box", "beagan box", "day-glo box", and more, with the most common name being "beige box". Various instructional files dating back to the early-mid 1980s can be found on websites which collect BBS ephemera such as textfiles.com and totse.com.
  • Check the laws regarding the use of a phone jack at someone else's residence. This idea should only be used when you need to make an emergency phone call.
  • This will not only provide you with a phone that will work anywhere, it will also take the place of a cell phone (if you don't like the monthly contract). It will work by plugging into any outside jack that is company-installed and working.
  • A reminder: In the U.S., using this device to intercept or use another's phone service is a felony under state and federal laws. The federal sentencing guidelines call for a maximum of ten years. In most states, the crime would be prosecuted as a theft of service or a theft of utility.

Warnings

  • Use of someone else's telephone service without their permission is a Federal Offense. It is considered a Felony ("theft of service") punishable by fine and jail, with additional State prosecution as well.
