How to Make Apple Dumplings

Sweet, warm apple dumplings fill the house with a fall aroma. Dripping with a tasty vanilla sauce, these apple dumplings make perfect treats to set on your table for dessert.
  • Makes: 6 servings

Steps

  1. Prepare your pan and oven. Preheat the oven to 400° Fahrenheit (200° Celsius). Spread butter over a 9 x 13 inch baking pan using a pastry brush.
  2. Roll the pastry out into a 24 x 16 inch rectangle on a floured surface.
  3. Cut the pastry out into 6 square-sized pieces.
  4. Place an apple onto each square piece. Cut the butter into 8 pieces and add a piece into each square. Set aside the extra two pieces of butter for later use.
  5. Sprinkle the brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg over the apples and pastry pieces. Ensure the brown sugar goes all over the apples and is coated properly.
  6. Make the dumplings. Using wet hands, bring one of the corners of the pastry square up to the top of the apple. Bring the opposite corner to the top and pinch it together. Bring up the two remaining corners and seal them together. Repeat with the rest of the dumplings.
    • Ensure you slightly pinch the pastry dough in the corners to completely seal the dumplings.
  7. Place the dumplings on the prepared baking tray.
  8. Make the vanilla sauce. In a large saucepan combine the sugar, vanilla extract, water, and remaining butter over medium heat. Have it boil for about five minutes until the sugar dissolves
  9. Slowly pour the sauce over the dumplings.
  10. Have the dumplings bake in the oven for about 50-60 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Serve. Have the dumplings cool for about five minutes until warm. Place on a serving plate and serve with vanilla ice cream orwhipped cream if desired. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 recipe pastry for double-crust pie
  • 6 large Rome apples, peeled and cored
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Tips

  • You can also spread extra vanilla sauce over the apple dumplings when they have finished baking for a sweeter taste.
  • The Rome apples can also be substituted with Granny Smith apples.

Warnings

  • Take caution not to over-boil the vanilla sauce or it will burn and blacken.
