Boston is filled with history, distinctive neighborhoods and entertainment. Packing light has its benefits if you're flying or if you just don't want to lug around lots of luggage. Knowing how to pack for a trip to Boston will make a trip much more enjoyable.

Steps

  1. Check the Boston weather forecast to plan what clothing to bring.
    • Boston's weather has a reputation for unpredictability, so packing with layers in mind is usually a good idea.
    • Pack for a trip with at least 1 or 2 items of rain gear, such as a slicker, umbrella or waterproof shoes.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/2/2d/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet2.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet2.jpg
/images/thumb/2/2d/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet2.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet2.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
    • If you're planning a summer trip to Boston, bring sunglasses, sun block and perhaps a swimsuit for swimming in a hotel pool or at a Boston beach.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/34/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet3.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet3.jpg
/images/thumb/3/34/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet3.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-1Bullet3.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
    • Travel to Boston can be fairly humid, so think about 100% cotton clothing for comfort.
  2. Bring clothing that reflects the activities you plan to participate in.
    • A good plan is packing one outfit for each day.
    • Plan to do laundry if your trip to Boston will last at least three weeks.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/e4/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet2.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet2.jpg
/images/thumb/e/e4/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet2.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet2.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
    • Some clubs have dress codes, so bring one dressy item.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/f/f7/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet3.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet3.jpg
/images/thumb/f/f7/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet3.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet3.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
    • Black is always a good color for dressing up.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/a/a3/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet4.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet4.jpg
/images/thumb/a/a3/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet4.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet4.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
    • Choose multipurpose clothing items for greater versatility and to save space when packing.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/7/7f/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet5.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet5.jpg
/images/thumb/7/7f/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet5.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-2Bullet5.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
  3. Make a list of what to pack for a trip to Boston.
    • Be certain that everything has more than one function.
    • If it's not on your list, don't pack it.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/1/1e/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-3Bullet2.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-3Bullet2.jpg
/images/thumb/1/1e/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-3Bullet2.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-3Bullet2.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
  4. Bundle or roll up clothing before placing them in a suitcase or bag. Use every space.
    • Folding takes up too much space in a suitcase and often adds wrinkles to clothing.
    • Stick shoes, belts and other rigid items in the outer edge of the suitcase.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/3/32/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-4Bullet2.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-4Bullet2.jpg
/images/thumb/3/32/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-4Bullet2.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-4Bullet2.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}
  5. Limit toiletries to small containers.
    • Trip planning should always include plastic bags, such as Ziplocs. This keeps toiletries from leaking onto clothing. Plastic bags can later be reused for dirty clothes or garbage.
  6. Split clothing for a group between various suitcases if travel to Boston includes flying. That way, if the airline loses one suitcase, everyone still has clothing.
  7. Pack for travel to Boston by including a carry-on bag for important papers, valuables and items you can't do without. Items you might want to keep close include:
    • Chewing gum to help your ears if you're flying.
    • Tickets, travel itinerary and trip planning notes.
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/d/d0/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-7Bullet2.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-7Bullet2.jpg
/images/thumb/d/d0/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-7Bullet2.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-7Bullet2.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}

    • If you're coming from outside the U.S., you may need an electrical adapter and plug converter
https://www.wikihow.com/images/thumb/e/ec/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-9Bullet4.jpg/v4-460px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-9Bullet4.jpg
/images/thumb/e/ec/Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-9Bullet4.jpg/aid1299706-v4-728px-Pack-for-a-Trip-to-Boston-Step-9Bullet4.jpg

License: Creative Commons

"}

Tips

  • Place a business card with a cell phone number in the baggage label. A business card doesn't reveal the address of your empty home. Write your cell phone number and destination address on a self-adhesive label inside your suitcase. This helps the airline in case the baggage label comes off.
  • Scan passports and tickets and store them in a web-based email account. This allows you to still have access to important information even if it's lost.

Warnings

  • Bostonians take their sports very seriously. Don't wear gear from other cities.
