How to Sneak Around the House at Night to Eat (For Kids)

Hunger is one of the struggles children must overcome through the night, since many parents discourage their kids from eating midnight snacks. If you find that you need a little something, follow these steps, and you can soothe your rumbling stomach and successfully raid the kitchen.

Steps

  1. Plan your raid before you sneak out. Highlight the important steps, including how you'll escape your bedroom and when you'll attack the kitchen. Take note of your parents' bedtime, and make sure your route is clear beforehand in order to avoid tripping over objects.
    • Unorganized raids rarely go as expected, so it is best to lay out a clear plan.
    • Plan for any relatives listening or trying to catch you in the middle of your raid.
  2. Wear dark clothing. While it isn't necessary, it lowers the chance of someone spotting you. Tight-fitting clothes are also recommended, as it prevents the fabric from being caught on something or making too much noise against your skin. If possible, wear your pajamas so that if someone catches you, you can say that you were getting a drink.
    • Leave pillows underneath your blankets in the shape of a body. This gives the appearance that you are still in bed. However, there is a chance that your parents may discover your trick. All in all, the best method is to not get caught.
  3. Try to schedule a time for your air conditioner to turn on during the time you plan to sneak out. When the air conditioner turns on, wait a minute or two (depending on how long the AC will be on). After a while, it will provide good but limited, ambient noise that will cover up your noise. Your half-asleep family will hear the air conditioner and dismiss its noises.
  4. Take slow steps. Walk with your toes first and ease back onto your heels. Another option is to use your heel first and ease your weight onto your toes. Walking flat-footed creates loud thumps. Instead of turning on the lights, bring a small flashlight, and do your best to cover up its beam. Refrain from waking up pets; otherwise, slowly wake them and provide comfort so they don't think you're an intruder. Below is a list of events you may encounter, along with tips on how to deal with them:
    • Someone Wakes Up. In this situation, avoid running back to your room. Not only will you lose any progress you've made but you'll also attract attention. Instead, get a drink and pretend that you're thirsty. Another option is to find a hiding spot. You could also lay down on a chair or a couch and pretend to be asleep. If your parent(s) question you, explain that you came down for a drink but became too tired to return to your room. Once your parent(s) return to his/her room, wait until he/she is asleep before continuing your kitchen raid.
    • Climbing Stairs. Staircases often creak underneath people's weight. To prevent any noises, take careful steps with your toes first. Always take a double step which is where you take one step with one foot before bringing your other foot down on the same step. And, to avoid creaking, plan your route in daylight, and pinpoint non-creaky spots.
    • Opening The Refrigerator/Pantry. Avoid using the handle to open the refrigerator, as this often causes it to creak or crack. Instead, find the crease where the door meets the body. Wriggle your fingers in between the two until it opens. Ease the door open from there. Unfortunately, the same method cannot be applied to pantries, as they often creak when opened slowly. The best is to open it quickly without knocking it into the wall.
    • Opening Doors. Turn the handle slowly. Using your free hand, apply a light pressure to the gap where the door meets the frame. Once you walk through the door, slowly pull it closed while keeping the handle turned so it doesn't click into place when pulled shut.

Tips

  • Wear socks to muffle your feet just that much more. This is especially recommended for those who have wood, tile, or linoleum flooring. Your feet sometimes end up slightly sticking to the floor which can make noise. If your house is entirely carpeted, you can probably get away with being barefoot.
  • Keep in mind that people are more sensitive to noise 0 - 30 minutes after they fall asleep, and 1 - 2 hours before they usually wake up. Try to sneak out/in before these times!
  • Have a list of excuses ready for any situation.
  • When going down stairs, stay as close to the ends of the steps as possible. They step will be less likely to creak.
  • Prepare ahead of time. Go through the path you plan for your sneaking. Such as with stairs, which steps always squeak, sometimes squeak, and don't squeak so you can successfully make it down quietly. Same for doors. Practice opening them quietly. If the door to the cupboard is loud no matter what you do (or any other door) open it during the day if possible. Just be sure you're the last to do so before everyone goes to bed so they don't shut it. If your planning looks too suspicious, prepare when no one is home or inside.
  • You can also try to use the toilet then when that water noise is on you can sneak around to muffle what your are doing.
  • Wear dark clothes such as dark blue, but NOT black or you won't blend in properly.
  • Have a map of your house drawn out with good hiding places noted.
  • If you have to sneeze plug your nose and close your mouth.
  • If you're a light sleeper, you could always bring a blanket and something to protect yourself (such as a bat if you have one.). That way, if you get caught, tell them you heard a noise. Just be sure to act scared!
  • Go alone, as other people can hinder your advances and make more noise.
  • Some refrigerators make noises when are left open for too long, if you see a button that tells the refrigerator the door is closed press that every 10 seconds, or close the door and be careful!
  • If it is a legal sneak (people won't be mad if they catch you, you are just sneaking so you don't bug them) Be sure to leave a note, it prevents a lot of problems.
  • If you have to cough find a pillow and set it on a couch, then dive your head into the pillow and cough.
  • Wearing a dark colored housecoat would work if you do not have dark clothes.
  • Don't get caught! If you do, make up an excuse, but don't use the same one every time or they'll become suspicious.
  • It might be best if you get (insert object here) while exiting the room after explaining your excuse to someone.Just bring a lightweight blanket, which could be an alternative to socks. Pick it up from the ground when your on the carpet!
  • If there is a room with no-one in it, hide in there if anyone comes
  • Make a plan to circle the places in the house where it creaks.
  • It's best not to tell your siblings. They may tell your parents about it!
  • During the day, test the steps and take note of the ones that creak.
  • If you're going to get a snack like chips or something else that will make noise, put it in a bowl during the day.
  • If you hear someone getting up, make a noise, and if they question why you're up, say you heard the noise and wanted to investigate.
  • If you're young, put your plushie somewhere not near your room so that it you get caught, you can tell that you lost your plushie.
  • Instead of sneaking out every night, you can collect lots of food and drinks the first night and hide them some where in your room. That way whenever you're hungry, you'll have your own secret stash of food.
  • If your bedroom is upstairs, brush your back against the wall and avoid the middle of the staircase. This will stop most of the staircase noise.
  • If your parents walk into your room, beforehand stuff pillows under your blanket so it looks like you sleeping. You can even add some doll hair to make it look like your hair!
  • Try to chew silently.
  • If someone comes don't panic. Throw an object to distract the person. If there is a place where you can hide nearby, tiptoe quickly there. If not, stay completely still.
  • When opening or closing doors, keep the knob twisted until it is fully open or fully shut to avoid noises.

Warnings

  • Try not to do any tricks that will immediately show you are sneaking (ex: Don't do the pillow under the covers trick, because if someone pulls up your covers and sees your pillow they will find out you are sneaking).
  • Don't carry anything that makes a bright light or might make a loud sound.
  • Do not eat spicy or acidic foods during your raid like tomatoes or hot peppers as they will give you a stomach ache, hard time falling asleep, etc.
  • Be careful as your parents might find out that food is missing!
  • Be careful going up and down stairs in the dark.
  • If you have to open the refrigerator to get a snack, push back the door to prevent making noise. In case you do get caught, have a list of excuses on your wrist or something.
  • Check if the food you are eating is safe to eat. If anything is left out for more than 2 hours, avoid eating it.
  • Don't carry a flashlight that is on.
  • Don't sneak for too long, as it might make your parents think you were kidnapped.
  • Also check if you are allergic to that food. If you are, avoid eating it!
