Do you know about Amazon - a great big shopping site that hosts zillions-and-zillions of products? They have almost everything that is available to mankind in their online store. If you enjoy buying online and you think you can't find stuff elsewhere, try looking for your product on their website, and you'll more than likely find your product there.

Creating an Account

  1. Visit Amazon's web site in your web browser. To order anything on Amazon, you will need to create an account. This will store your shipping and billing information, and allow you to quickly place future orders. You don't have to create your account first, but it's easiest to get it done and out of the way.
  2. Start the account creation process. Hover over "Your Account", located to the right of the Amazon search bar, and click the "New customer? Start here" link. This will open the Registration page.
  3. Fill out the registration form. You will need to enter your name, email address, and create a password. You also have the option of entering your mobile phone number, but it's not necessary. Once you fill out the form, you will be taken back to the Amazon homepage, logged into your new account.
  4. Add your shipping address. While you could go now and browse the store for items to add to your cart, you'll make the checkout process a lot quicker if you enter in your shipping and billing information before you start shopping.
    • Hover over "Your Account" and click the "Your Account" link at the top of the menu.
    • In the Settings section, under "Address Book", click "Add New Address."
    • Fill out the form to enter in your address details. You can also choose a nearby Amazon Locker pickup location if you'd rather have your packages shipped there.
    • You can add names and addresses for people other than yourself if you want to ship the package to someone.
    • Click "Save & Continue" when finished.
  5. Add your billing information. Once you've entered in a shipping address, you can enter your billing information so that checking out only take a few clicks. You can also apply Amazon Gift Cards to your account so that purchases are automatically deducted from the gift card first.
    • Hover over "Your Account" and click the "Your Account" link at the top of the menu.
    • Click the "Manage Payment Options" link in the payment section.
    • Click the "Add a payment method" button.
    • Choose the payment method you want to add. You can add a credit or debit card, a checking account, or the balance of a gift card.
    • Fill out the requested information. If you are entering a credit or debit card, you will need to enter the card number, name on card, expiration date, security code, and billing address. If you are entering a checking account, you will need to enter the name on the account, the routing number, the account number, and your driver's license number. If you're using a gift card, you simply need to enter the code on the back of the card.

Finding an Item

  1. Use the search box to find your product. Once you have your account details entered, it's time to start shopping. The quickest way is to use the search bar, especially if you know exactly what you want. The search box will attempt to match products as your search, which means you may only need to enter a few letters to find the product you want. You can search by barcode number, ISBN number, or item title.
  2. Browse by department. Use the "Shop by Department" menu on the left side of the Amazon homepage to browse the most popular sections. Click the "Full Store Directory" link at the bottom of the menu to see al the departments on Amazon. The front page of each department will show special deals and featured products.
    • You can see subcategories and options on the left side of each department page. You can check the boxes to filter your results.
  3. Open up your main product page of the item you are intending to purchase.
  4. Choose between new and used. When you click an item, you will be shown the new item that is available directly from Amazon. The front page of each department will show special deals and featured products.
    • Don't be afraid to buy used quality items! If the item looks to be in good enough condition for you, you can save a great deal of money sometimes. Even the Used-Like New can be a great savior at reduced prices.
    • Shipping will vary depending on the seller that you choose. Always be wary been buying used items, and make sure to check the seller's rating.
    • Make sure you know whether you are buying from the Amazon warehouse (or through the Fulfilled by Amazon program, as they use the same set up), or an individual Amazon Marketplace seller (who is selling from their own private business).
  5. Click the "Add to Cart" button that is located to the right hand side of the page. You can set the quantity for many items if you wish to order more than one. Your cart stores all the items that you are shopping for, allowing you to check out all at once.
    • If you would like to change the quantity of the item, you may find the drop-down box above this button. Click the drop-down and select your quantity, before clicking the button.
  6. Look for free shipping deals. Amazon will give you free shipping on qualified items over a certain amount. You can combine multiple items that qualify to reach this amount in order to receive the free shipping. Free shipping typically takes 5-8 business days.

Checking Out

  1. Review your cart. Hover over the Cart button at the top left of the page. Click the "View Cart" button to open your cart. You can review all of the items that you are ordering. If you want to change or remove items, you can type new values in the Quantity box".
    • If you purchase is a gift for someone, check the "This is a gift" box underneath the item name. The recipient will get a gift receipt, but the cost will be hidden. You will also be able to add a personalized message and pay an additional fee for gift wrapping.
  2. Click the "Proceed to Checkout" if all the items in your cart are updated to the right quantity. You will be shown the shipping address and payment method that will be used for the order. 4. Ensure that all information is correct. This includes the billing address, shipping address, payment accounts, credited amounts, etc.
  5. Enter in any promotional codes. There is a box next to the payment method that allows you to enter in promotional codes. These change all the time, and are usually product or brand dependent.
  6. Place your order. Click the "Place your order" button, if you are satisfied with everything about your order. It is found in the right hand side of the page. You will have thirty minutes to cancel your order without a penalty if you change your mind. Your order will typically be processed the next day if you order in the afternoon.
  7. Check your email. Amazon will send you a confirmation email to the address that you used to create your account. You can use these emails to track your packages and manage your order.

Setting Up 1-Click Ordering

  1. Open up the "Your Account" page. 1-Click Ordering is a setting that allows you to place and complete orders with only one click, eliminating the need to review orders or confirm anything. You will need to enable 1-Click Ordering, as it has the potential to be misused.
    • If you share the computer with a lot of different people, it is advisable that you do not enable 1-Click Ordering.
  2. Click the "1-Click Settings" link. This is located in the Settings section. You will be asked for your password again before you can continue.
  3. Set your preferred address and payment method. This will be the address that all 1-Click orders are sent to, and the payment method that will be automatically charged. You can also set your preferred shipping method, which will affect the price of any purchase.
  4. Turn on 1-Click. Click the "Turn 1-Click on" button on the right side of the page. This will toggle the 1-Click settings for your account. You can now click the "1-Click Order" button on most items (including all digital items including all Amazon Kindle books and Kindle apps, etc, as well as Amazon Video (formerly called both Amazon Instant Video and Amazon Video-on-Demand)) to have them instantly ordered and shipped. You will have 30 minutes to cancel erroneous orders.

Tips

  • Like any type of shopping, try to have an idea of what you want before you go shopping on Amazon. It is easy to get caught up and overspend.
  • If you're using Google Chrome, there is a free extension called "Amazon Easy Search" that will allow you to search Amazon for any words you have highlighted.
  • When checking out, ensure that you are clear on the shipping type and time of arrival. Although sellers have no more than two days to get their sold items out of their warehouse door and to the post office or shipping service (as explained when the person begins selling on Amazon), it may take a week or two to arrive at your doorstop, so be prepared.

Warnings

  • Although few Marketplace sellers are scam artists, there are some scams you want to be wary of when purchasing items on Amazon. If something doesn't look right - question it and move away from that particular purchasing decision and buy another one instead!

Things You'll Need

  • Internet access, and a capable web browser.
  • An online-eligible form of payment, such as a credit card, a debit card, or a Visa gift card.
  • A verifiable shipping address
