Most people can honestly say that "breaking up is a hard thing to do." We often think of this when it comes to relationships, but we can also extend this towards relationships with friend or "friendships." When much of your life revolves around a certain person, it's hard to adjust to life without them. Nevertheless, you can cope with the loss, given time and some good advice.

Steps

  1. Talk to someone about the problem. It could be another friend, a parent, a school counselor etc. Rejection is tough to deal with and having someone there to validate your feelings can often help you through the process. Even just plain venting is good.
  2. Find a creative outlet to express your feelings. Many times it's a great idea to invest into music, writing or even art. From the worst of experiences can come a great piece of work.
  3. Volunteer. Helping someone in need can make your own problems seem much more trivial by comparison.
  4. Join a club or group. Having something to do can take you focus off losing your friend while allowing you to make new friends. It's great getting new friends. If you get weary of the same old uninteresting friends, meet some new ones on the web.
  5. Read a good book or watch a good movie. This will help keep your mind off things.
  6. If your friend tells to you that you are going to part ways, don't cry. It makes it harder for him or her and will not win you any sympathy.
  7. Just tell yourself over and over that he/she was never your friend to begin with. A true friend is forever and is out looking for your best interests.
  8. Don't dwell on the negatives, look towards the positives and learn who your real friends are. Good friends are hard to find but they will be the people who will help you through a rough time.

Tips

  • If you're on a social networking site such as Twitter, Facebook or Myspace, don't post things about how bad of a friend that person was to you. In the end once it's posted on the internet it's on there forever.
  • If you do have to cry, try to find some alone time and then bawl your eyes out. It's okay to cry.
  • Don't be a jerk to them afterwards, it won't help at all, still be kind to them even if they aren't to you. Just remember they weren't a true friend if they didn't keep your friendship going.
  • Some people come into our lives for a reason, to better help us understand the kinds of people we are. Don't see this as a bad thing, but as a lesson you can apply to the next person you try to befriend.
  • Don't push it, but try to find out what happened between you two, whether it be your fault or theirs; at least you will understand each other and help each other repair the friendship.
  • Friends fade into acquaintances and acquaintances grow into friends. Just remember nothing lasts forever.

Warnings

  • Don't harass the other person. If things get too far, it can lead to serious consequences. Be the better person and don't let them get to you.
  • Don't complain about your old friend to people who are still friends with them or try to spread nasty/malicious rumors as a form of revenge.
  • Don't talk incessantly about your old friend to other people. That can wear thin fast and bringing him/her up in every conservation shows that you still think about that person.
  • Don't act immature about it. As people we have the tendency to try to make a war with people. It's best just to let go of things, and what's done is already done.
