Replacing old double hung windows with new vinyl replacement windows is an easy and rewarding task for the weekend warrior or for anyone who is comfortable using tools.

Steps

  1. The only thing you require for this DIY project. Hammer, Cordless drill, Tape measure, Caulk gun, Level, Pliers, Putty knife, Utility knife & Protractor
  2. Remove the first sash. Pry off the molding around the window. This is usually three pieces of either shoe molding, quarter round, or some other thin decorative wood. Once removed, the bottom "sash" (another term for window) will have the ability to swing outward into the room. Once the bottom sash is able to "swing" simply cut the ropes that are tied to it. The weights in the walls will fall to the floor with a loud thud, don't panic.
  3. Remove the second sash. The harder of two. There's a divider strip between the two sashes which is usually stuck in tightly. This will easily come out with a smack on well placed chisel. This may take a few tries, depending on how much paint is on them, but they should come out in long whole pieces. With the divider strips out, the top sash is removed the way the bottom one was..
  4. Clear the opening. Scrape away any loose paint or wood. Remove the pulleys that guided the ropes.
  5. Remove the old storm window assembly.
  6. Insert the new vinyl window in the closed and locked position, if possible. Vinyl window frames are fairly flexible. The sash (the glass part) will help hold the frame square during installation. Use shims to adjust the window unit to the plumb, level and square position and screw the window frame to structural lumber. If the manufacturer specifies screw placements hidden by the sash, insert the new vinyl window frame with the sash removed. Get it plumbed and level. Once screwed in (6 screws is good), insert the vinyl sashes.
  7. Re-install the old or new strips of molding on the interior side of the window. The exterior side of the window will either need trim or caulking or both.

Tips

  • Before you start this project, already have the new window(s)available.
  • Have some wedges available. The can be made, but are cheap to buy and are a useful tool. They will be scored, snapped and left in place.
  • Caulk all gaps. Don't be stingy on the caulk. A good latex caulk with silicone will be easy to clean up any "squeeze-outs".
  • Do not over tighten the mounting screws. Doing this will "warp" the frame of the window.
  • Remove the screen and the windows from your new vinyl window to make it lighter and safer to move around and work with. Don't over tighten the screws when installing the new window frame or the new windows will be hard to open and close.
  • This is easier than you might think. Allow about two hours per window for removal of the old and installation of the new. (*Not including waiting for primer and paint to dry.)
  • Have some fiberglass insulation available. Most replacement windows have a "header" that allows you to raise the top 3/4" or so, the gap in the header should be filled with insulation.
  • Look for other alternatives that are more suitable for the character of your home. Can the sash windows be fixed and renovated, or do they really need replacing?
  • Be sure to prime and paint whatever exposed areas you can before installing the new window. It will be much easier and cleaner before the new window is in. The primer/sealer will prevent a lot of moisture damage in the future.
  • Window manufacturers use two sets of measurements:"tip to tip" and rough opening.Make sure that your supplier knows which measurements you are using.
  • Have lots of caulk handy.
  • Despite the fact that there are advantages to plastic windows (eg. No rattling sashes/Better insulation compared to old windows) you should be aware that often these replacement windows don't last very long (sometimes less than thirty years) and that they can detract from the appearance of a house considerably. Original timber-frame sash windows can be renovated to stop rattling or letting drafts in - and they last for centuries.
  • Measure your new vinyl window carefully so that it makes the tightest fit possible otherwise you'll have to install large pieces of molding to cover unexpected gaps.

Warnings

  • Make sure the window is right side up when unwrapping it. It's possible for the windows to have been shipped unlocked, and unwrapping an unlocked window upside down will result in the lower window sash crashing down and most definitely causing damage.
  • If you live in Britain, make sure that your house is not a LISTED BUILDING or in a CONSERVATION AREA. Rules have been tightened over the last few years, and people have got into trouble for putting plastic windows in their houses without knowing that they are in a conservation area. Check with your local borough council first.
