Although you could purchase a dry erase calendar from any office supply store, why be boring? Get creative and design a unique and enviable dry erase calendar using a hard board surface and some paint swatches in your favorite colors.

Sourcing your Supplies

  1. Depending on where you plan to hang this calendar, choose paint swatches and a picture frame in a variety of bold, bright colors.
    • The base size and number of swatches you use can based on the kind of calendar you want to create––weekly or monthly.
    • Paint swatches can be found in stores that stock house paints, from hardware and paint stores to decorating stores.
  2. Choose a suitable base. One easy way to create your calendar is to use an empty picture frame. If you plan to use a picture frame, find one that complements your style and can accommodate 35 paint swatches.
    • A standard picture frame is 12”x16”, which will fit 35 paint swatches.
    • You could also go another way by selecting a cork board or even use plywood if you are looking for something more rugged but you'll need a suitable perspex front affixed to the board after adding the swatches, to be able to write on and wipe off if you use these alternatives.

Getting the base ready

  1. Sand the wood or clean the frame or cork board. Even if you purchased a new frame or board, you will want to make sure it’s completely clean before you glue the paint swatches to it.
  2. Decorate or paint the base if desired. If you purchased a standard picture frame but want more “sparkle,” be-dazzle the frame edges with faux jewels, feathers or glitter to spice up your board. You could also paint the edges or use a special faux finish to create an antique or crackle look.

Adding the Paint Swatches

  1. Lay out and affix the paint swatches to the board. Before you make the swatch placement permanent, lay out each swatch to be sure that you like the pattern formation.
    • Try different combinations or mixtures of colors before making a decision. You could also involve your significant other or the kids in deciding on the paint swatch placement.
  2. Place one dab of glue on the top and bottom back side of each paint swatch. Then press down to make it adhere to the glass frame, cork board or wooden board.
    • If you're gluing swatches to wood, you may need to use wood glue for a better result.
  3. Add the glass back into the frame over the swatches. Then add dates and a header for the board, so that it looks like a calendar. You can do this with either the temporary dry erase or permanent marker.
    • Decide whether you want to permanently head the calendar or keep it completely temporary. Select a neutral, but bold color to use if you plan to create permanent headings.
    • Maintain an attractive dry erase pen container near the board for quick and easy additions, or adhere a pen holder. Don’t forget about keeping dry erasers on hand too.

Tips

  • If you plan to use a picture frame you can either place swatches on the outside of the glass or you could remove the glass and glue swatches on the inside board.
  • You can also use this method to make chore charts, reward sheets and various other goal-setting ideas.
  • Search the Internet for ideas of different calendar designs. Before you commit to a certain way to heading it, look at the bevy of different ways you can design the calendar to suit your needs.
