If you are a user of Google Chrome, it is likely that you are using the built-in ad and pop-up blocking software, or you are using the Adblock app and extension that can be added to Chrome. However, there are times when a website might require ads or pop-ups to load. While it is possible to allow only selected websites to show pop-ups, sometimes it is easier to completely disable the setting. This wikiHow will explain how to disable Chrome's blocking settings on a computer or a mobile device, and also how to disable the Adblock extension on a computer.

Disabling Chrome’s Blocking Settings

  1. Open Google Chrome by clicking on the Chrome icon. You should be able to find this on your desktop or by clicking on the

I edited this screenshot of a Windows icon.

License: Public Domain

"} Windows Start icon and checking your installed programs.
    • If you're using a mobile device, it should be on the home screen or in your app list.
  2. Tap or click on the menu button at the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Settings. This should be toward the bottom of the pop-up menu.
  4. Click on Advanced toward the bottom of the page on computer. This will show more options on the screen.
    • Skip this step on mobile as it should already be displayed.
  5. Scroll down and click on Content Settings on computer.
    • Mobile users will instead tap on Site Settings.
  6. Select the option that says Pop-ups and redirects. The option will be about halfway down the page.
  7. Click the switch to the On position next to Blocked (recommended). This will change the setting to Allowed and the switch will change from

I edited this screenshot of an Android icon.

License: Fair Use

"} to

I edited this screenshot of an Android icon.

License: Fair Use

"}, indicating that pop-ups are now enabled.
  8. Tap or click on the back button to return to the previous page.
  9. Tap or click on Ads. This should be the option under Pop-ups and redirects.
  10. Tap or click on the switch on the right of the page. The switch will change to

I edited this screenshot of an Android icon.

License: Fair Use

"} and the setting will now say Allowed. Ads are now enabled on Chrome.

Disabling the Adblock Extension on Computer

  1. Open Google Chrome by clicking on the Chrome icon. You should be able to find this on your desktop or by clicking on the

I edited this screenshot of a Windows icon.

License: Public Domain

"} Windows Start icon and checking your installed programs.
  2. Click on the menu button at the top right of the screen.
  3. Hover the mouse pointer over More tools.
  4. Click on Extensions on the pop-up menu. This will bring you to a list of all of your installed extensions.
  5. Click on the switch under the Adblock section. Adblock is now disabled.
    • If you would prefer to completely uninstall Adblock, then click on Remove under the Adblock section. Click on Remove again on the pop-up menu.

Tips

  • You can also add or remove websites from your allow or block list by going to the Pop-ups and redirects, and clicking on Add next to Block or Allow . Type in the website address and click on Add. You will only be able to perform this function on a computer as there is not an option to do this on mobile devices.
  • If you want to temporarily pause Adblock, you can right click on the Adblock icon at the top right of Chrome and either select Pause on this site or Pause on all sites . The icon looks like a red stop sign with a white hand in the middle.

Warnings

  • Note that allowing popups increases your risk of infecting your device with malware, spyware and viruses.
