Gardeners can create beautiful container gardens by arranging live flowers inside well-crafted pots. Flowers should be arranged within the pot according to good design principles.

Choosing Flowers for the Pots

  1. Choose 2 flowers that have blooms that are similar in size and color. The flowers should be about the same height and width.
  2. Choose a focal plant. Good choices could include plants with striking foliage, like a coleus, or trailing plants like the ivy geranium.
  3. Arrange the small pots of plants inside the larger pot. Place the 2 flowers on the exterior and the focal plant in between them. When you have the design that you want, remove the potted plants from the larger container and set them aside.

Placing the Arrangement in the Pot

  1. Place a layer of gravel along the bottom of the large pot. The gravel will promote drainage and will prevent root rot.
  2. Remove the focal plant from its pot by grasping the bottom of the stem with your non-dominant hand and tapping the bottom of the pot with your dominant hand. This should loosen the soil from the side of the pot and make the plant easy to remove.
  3. Place the focal plant into the larger pot.
  4. Loosen the flowers from their pots and place them around the focal plant.
  5. Fill in the large container with potting mix by pouring it around the plants and arranging it using a garden trowel. When you’re finished, the surface of the soil should be 1” to 2” below the lip of the pot.
  6. Water the plants thoroughly. If the soil sinks, then add more soil and water the plants again.
  7. Place your potted arrangement in a location that allows the plants to receive the correct amount of light for their needs.

Tips

  • Use a weak fertilizer (1 teaspoon per gallon of water) each time you water your plants. Alternatively, you can use a stronger dose (one tablespoon per gallon of water) every seventh to tenth watering.
  • Add a layer of mulch across the top of the soil in your pots. Sphagnum moss, peat moss or small stones will help to keep water from evaporating out of the soil.

Warnings

  • Make sure that each pot has a hole in the bottom to allow excess water to drain out. If no hole is present, then drill a hole in the bottom of the pot before placing your plants inside.
