Cleaning marble table tops requires caution and special care.  Since marble is very soft and prone to acid damage, consideration must be taking when selecting cleaning products.

Steps

  1. Remove all items from marble table or marble countertop, with a dry clean soft cloth, clean the marble to remove debris and food crumbs.
  2. If there is lots of oil on marble surface from cooking, take a clean cotton towel and wet it with some acetone found at a hardware store and wipe marble surface.
  3. Use a neutral pH non rinsing marble cleaning product available from specialty natural stone supplies supplier.  If neutral cleaner is not available, mix one teaspoon of non citrus dish washing liquid in a gallon of warm water, wet marble surface with mixture, give it few minutes and scrub marble with a soft white pad.
  4. Squeegee the excess solution and with a new wet clean cotton towel,  wipe surface to rinse the remaining soap off.
  5. With a dry cotton towel, buff marble surface.

Tips

  • It is recommended that a stone penetrating sealer is applied after deep cleaning.
  • Do not use abrasives or steel-wool on polished marble surfaces.
  • Keep acidic product jars and or bottles on plastic mats or boards
  • Use polyethylene cutting board to cut or prepare foods

Warnings

  • Marble is very sensitive to acidic products such as vinegar, salad dressing, ketchup, tomatoes, wine, soda, citrus drinks, lemon; the list goes on.  Make an effort to safeguard marble surfaces from these products.
  • Use felt tips under heavy decorative pieces used as table tops or kitchen utensils.
  • Sealers do not protect marble surfaces against etching.
