Maybe you've never written a song at all, or maybe whenever you try to write a song it ends up sounding like something a children's show would play. Whatever the case, this article will take you step by step in the process of writing a song.

Writing Your Own Hit Song

  1. Figure out what the song is going to be about. You could write about something interesting that has happened to you, about something you want, about something you don't want, etc. The possibilities are endless!
  2. Do a free-write on the topic you are passionate about. Set a timer for two minutes and write everything that comes from your mind about that topic you are passionate about.
  3. Look at your writing and pick out key words in your free-write. These words are the ones you want to rhyme. Try to pick an even number of keywords. Let's say you were trying to write about your dog, and you might have, "My dog is brown and loving." Your keywords would be brown, and loving.
  4. Try to rhyme your keywords. You might need a rhyming dictionary. If you absolutely can't rhyme, you can do a close rhyme. In Journey's song, Don't Stop Believing, you have the lyrics, "Singers in a smoky room, a smell of wine and cheap perfume." The keywords are room and perfume.
  5. Divide up the lines in your free-write. The lines stop at the keyword. Most songs have two or four lines in each verse, which is what you're making, but you can do as many as you want. These lines will make up the verses.
  6. Pick out some really great lines. These lines have to be catchy and memorable. These verses will make up the chorus. The chorus is the part of the song that repeats in between every couple of verses.
  7. Put it all together and try it out!

Tips

  • Remember if you are really determined, don't give up.
  • Make sure you do vocal exercises before you sing.
  • If you get frustrated take a break, this is supposed to be fun.
  • Don't copy off of other bands' lyrics.
  • Use other singers' songs to inspire you. But remember, don't plagiarize!
  • Popular sets of chords have been exploited many times. It's not cheating. There are many songs that accidentally have the same popular chords.
  • Rhyming isn't necessary. It simply helps the song flow more smoothly.
  • This article only tells how to write the lyrics, so don't think this is your whole song.

Warnings

  • It may take several tries to make a song you actually like, so don't expect to have a perfect one on the first try!
  • You may not like your song, but other may absolutely love it.
