Pollen stains can happen very easily when cutting, arranging, or transporting flowers. Pollen can also fall onto your clothes if you're sitting, walking near or working around trees. Although pollen stains can be hard to remove, they can be removed if you are careful. Several methods are offered here, depending on what you have available and your personal preferences.

Steps

  1. Treat a pollen stain as soon as possible. The older a stain is, the harder it will be to remove.
  2. Avoid rubbing or brushing off pollen. This will only cause it to ingrain even more deeply, making it much harder to remove. In addition, do not place your fingers directly on a pollen stain. The oil from your fingers will cause the stain to set.
    • Do not dab or rub a pollen stain with water, ever! This will cause it to spread by dissolving the pollen particles.
  3. Shake the clothing or fabric first to remove as much pollen powder as possible. This might even be adequate to remove the pollen stain if it hasn't penetrated too far.
  4. Use adhesive tape. After shaking the clothing or fabric, if you haven't shaken off the pollen, try using tape before washing. Place the adhesive (sticky) tape over the pollen-affected area. Place it down gently, and do not press hard in case you press the pollen into the garment. Lift it up gently and quickly and hopefully a lot of the pollen will come up with it. Repeat a few times to see if this is sufficient.
    • A hand-held vacuum cleaner can be used in place of tape; just be sure to hold it close to the stain and not actually touch the stain.
  5. Wash or soak the garment or fabric item. At this point, if the pollen hasn't come up, try one of the following methods. Even if you intend to take the garment or item to the dry cleaner, at least shake and use the tape to remove as much as possible of the loose pollen, as it can rub in through friction when transported.

Cold water soak method

  1. Follow the initial shake and tape instructions above first.
  2. Place the garment in cold water.
  3. Leave it to soak for half an hour.
  4. Rinse thoroughly once the half hour is up. Repeat twice to remove as much of the stain as possible.
  5. Apply a spot stain remover. If the item is washable, wash it at as high a temperature as possible; if not, rinse again.
  6. Check that the stain has gone before drying. If not, repeat the stain and washing treatments to remove it.

Dry-cleaning solvent method

  1. Purchase dry cleaning solvent.
  2. Follow the initial shake and tape instructions above, then blot with the dry cleaning solvent. You can also dab at the back of the stain with the dry cleaning fluid while the stain is flat down on a paper towel. The paper towel will absorb the stain as it comes out of the fabric.
  3. Leave to air dry. Add a laundry pre-spotter to what's left of the stain.
  4. Rub gently with detergent.
  5. Wash the item as usual. Use bleach that is safe for the fabric. Dry as usual but only after checking the stain has gone.

Dishwashing soap method

  1. Once there is less pollen left after following the steps above, take the garment and rinse the affected area in cold water.
  2. Rub a decent amount of dish-washing soap on to the garment for about 2 minutes (or until it looks like the stain has just about come off).
  3. Rinse in cold water.
  4. Get the extremely hot water and let it soak for about 5 minutes.
  5. Wash in a normal wash afterwards.

Direct sunlight method

  1. Shake and lift off the excess pollen as outlined above.
  2. Lay out the garment in direct sunlight for a few hours. Check later to see if the stain has disappeared.

Tips

  • It's a good idea to cut off or spray hairspray over stamens from flowers laden with pollen that you're bringing into the house. This will prevent mishaps with the pollen.
  • Wear an apron over clothing when directly handling pollen-heavy plants.

Warnings

  • Don't forget to take precautions when throwing out floral arrangements; you can easily get pollen stains from old stamens as you're wrapping flowers for disposal.
