PDFs are great, until you notice a typo that needs fixing or another change you want to make but can’t. The good news is that it’s easy to convert a PDF to a Word document so you can make edits to it, and you have a few different options. We’ll show you how to use Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Adobe Acrobat Pro and CamScanner to convert your PDF.

Using Microsoft Word

  1. Find the PDF you want to open. Go to the location of the PDF on your computer.
  2. Right-click the PDF. Doing so will prompt a drop-down menu.
    • On a Mac, just click the PDF once and then click File in the top-left corner of the screen.
  3. Select Open with. It's near the top of the right-click drop-down menu. A pop-out list will appear.
    • On a Mac, you'll find this option near the top of the File drop-down menu.
  4. Click Word. This option is in the pop-out list.
    • On a Mac, you may click Microsoft Word here.
  5. Click OK when prompted. This will allow Microsoft Word to open the PDF as a Word document.
    • If you downloaded the PDF from online, you'll need to click Enable Editing at the top of the window and then click OK again before proceeding.
  6. Edit the Word document if necessary. As with any PDF conversion, the converted document may not have perfect page to page correspondence due to line breaks, page breaks, graphics, and so on; as such, some manual adjustment may be necessary.
  7. Save the converted PDF. Once you're ready to save the converted file as its own Word document, do the following:
    • Windows — Click File, click Save As, double-click This PC, enter a file name, select a save location on the left side of the window, and click Save.
    • Mac — Click File, click Save As, enter a name, select a file location, and click Save.

Using Google Docs

  1. Open Google Docs. Go to https://docs.google.com/ in your computer's web browser. This will open your Google Docs page if you're logged into your Google Account.
    • If you aren't logged in, enter your email address and password when prompted. You may first have to click Go to Google Docs in the middle of the page.
    • One caveat of using Google Docs to convert your PDF is that Google Docs will not preserve any of the PDF's photos.
  2. Click the "Upload" icon. Depending on your settings, it's either in the top-right side of the page under the Template Gallery or just under your profile picture.
  3. Click Upload. It's in the top-right corner of the "Open a file" window.
  4. Click Select a file from your computer. It's the blue button in the center of the window.
  5. Select your PDF file and click Open. This will upload the PDF file to your Google Drive and opens a preview once it has finished uploading.
  6. Click Open with. It's at the top of the PDF window. A drop-down menu will appear.
    • If you don't see the Open with drop-down box, move your mouse to the top of the window.
  7. Click Google Docs. This option is in the drop-down menu. Doing so opens the PDF as a Google Doc file.
    • If you don't see Google Docs as an option in the drop-down menu, you can add it: click Connect more apps in the drop-down menu, search for google docs, and click ➕ CONNECT to the right of the Google Docs option.
  8. Save the PDF as a Word document. This will allow you to download the Microsoft Word version of the PDF onto your computer:
    • Click File in the upper-left side of the Google Docs page.
    • Select Download as in the resulting drop-down menu.
    • Click Microsoft Word (.docx) in the pop-out menu.
    • Select a save location and/or click Save if prompted.

  2. Click Files in PC/Mac to import your PDF, or simply drag and drop files to here.
  3. Converting
  4. Click Download to save your file. The converted file is ready.
  5. Convert your PDF file without losing formatting. The fonts and images look exactly the same.

  2. Click File. It's in the top-left corner of the window (Windows) or the screen (Mac). Doing so prompts a drop-down menu.
  3. Click Open. This option is in the drop-down menu.
  4. Select your PDF. Go to the location of the PDF on your computer, then click the PDF to select it.
  5. Click Open. It's in the bottom-right corner of the window. Your PDF will open in Adobe Acrobat.
  6. Click File again. The drop-down menu will reappear.
  7. Select Export To. It's in the File drop-down menu. Doing so prompts a pop-out menu.
  8. Select Microsoft Word. This option is in the pop-out menu. Another pop-out menu will appear next to the current one.
  9. Click Word Document. It's in the final pop-out menu. Doing so will open a File Explorer (Windows) or a Finder (Mac) window in which to save your document.
  10. Save your file. Click a save location on the left side of the window (or, if you're on a Mac, in the "Where" drop-down box if present), then click Save at the bottom of the window.
