Ever since Google's Panda wrought havoc on the bamboo shoots of online business websites, every site owner has been scrambling for ways and means to save his website rank and position on the SERPs of various search engines! All along, the answer to all their concerns lay in original, useful, informative, and interesting content. We take a look at successfully developing professional content for a new website here, but owners of existing websites may also profit from insights provided here. The need to create professional content as a senior content writer led me to research on several different portals and sites. All had one common thing to say for content: Content is King. I beg to differ from all of them. I think Content is Emperor! Without original, useful, well-written, and interesting content, your new website cannot expect to rise in the search engine results pages or gain a significant rank.

Steps

  1. Look for experts who can write or writers who can articulate. Either way, you'll acquire quality content that people are at least comfortable with.
  2. Keep it simple and solid. Long sentences, rarely used words, and an idiom used only by the highly educated, are never required online. Look for talented content writers who can convey important information in the easiest words with a good flow and tone.
  3. Remember that Content is not a 'get it, forget it' kind of a job. Your site will require quality content at least as often as your competition refreshes theirs. You should ideally refresh and replenish your content at least every four months, although that depends to some extent on the kind of site you have.
  4. Find knowledgeable professionals. Professional content is best written by relevant professionals in your vertical who are great writers as well. Difficult to find the combination? Let the professionals create the content and then have a freelance or in-house editor touch up the grammar, construction, and other linguistic aspects.
  5. Retain your professional writers. There are many writers around these days (practically everyone is a writer of sorts!), but the really good ones are relatively fewer. Hold on to your content writer. They are going to get more precious very soon and will prove to be 100% cost-effective.
  6. Be sure that it is relevant and useful. Do not ask your web designer to write pages that relate to neurosurgery, foreign exchange, or English as a second language. Speak to an expert about providing such content as will go well on your site.
  7. Research your visitors' or target audience's needs and fulfill those needs. Also, ensure that you provide ALL the information a visitor might look for on your website. This will help you to know if you might have a connection.
  8. Your content can be informative if it actually provides information many people are looking for. A good way to find out what it is that people want more information on - even within the limited scope of your vertical - is to frequent the social network your audience goes to. Ask them point blank, if there aren't enough clues already. It is a question of being SOCIAL on a social network and not trying to market at all. Those two are critically important.

Warnings

  • Many website owners prefer to take shortcuts : asking unqualified people to write, spinning content from other sites, and even allowing complete idiots to manage and market the content produced by qualified writers. Try letting the writer himself manage and market the content.
  • Never allow unqualified persons in your organization to offer 'suggestions' to your content writers. Let the writers do their job. Get an opinion from your clients. If they have any positive criticism, pass it on to your writers. If not, allow the writers to work in peace.
  • Don't forget to get feedback from your audience on the quality of the content and what exactly they would like to read about on your site. Also remember to pass on that info to your writers.
  • Content is a living, working thing. Don't trivialize it.
