Everybody wants a clean, well working instrument. Why not you? This article is for the Tenor (with or without F or C attachments), alto, and valve trombones. It also includes how to wash your mouthpiece.

Steps

  1. Disassemble every part of your trombone. If you have an alto or tenor without valves, don't remove the counterweight. For F or C attachments, please remember how the tubing is attached. For valves, you will need to take off the valve caps.
  2. Follow these directions for different types of trombones:
    • Tenor, with C or F attachment, no valves: Wash out the tubing and tuning slides first. All steps are alike to the Tenor without attachments. Remember where the tubing goes.
    • Tenor w/ valves, no attachments: Remove to clean the valve caps and where they go. Follow all steps for the Tenor without valves or attachments. Add valve oil to valves.
    • Alto Trombone: Follow all steps for the Tenor trombone.

Tenor: without valves or F or C attachments

  1. Clean the tuning slide. First remove it from the trombone.
    • Fill up your sink with lukewarm water. Do not use hot water. This will destroy the lacquer.
    • Wash the tuning slide first with water, then with hand soap. Use a cleaning snake or coil brush. Rinse the soap out.
    • Leave the tuning slide on a towel, in an air conditioned room, where it will not be disturbed.
    • Put tuning slide oil on the turning slide.
  2. Clean the bell. The tuning slide shouldn't be placed in the bell yet.
    • Fill up a bathtub with lukewarm water. Make a mixture of water and soap, scrub the inside of the bell with a wash rag/cloth, and then use a cleaning snake for the smaller endings.
    • Rinse out the soap.
    • Let dry. Do not assemble the bell with the tuning slide.
  3. Clean the slides.
    • Wash the inner slide first.
    • Get the outer slide, and fill it with lukewarm water. Slush pump in and out. Use the cleaning snake for the outer and inner slides. Empty the water valve just in case.
    • Let the slides dry on a towel.
    • Put slide oil on the slides.
  4. Dry off the trombone with a cleaning cloth and wash your mouthpiece:
    • Wash with cold water and soap. Use a mouthpiece brush. Let dry.

Warnings

  • Do not dry any part of your trombone with a hair dryer, heater or direct sunlight. You may burn your hands.
  • Do not do this every day. Like with hair, if you wash it too much, it gets damaged. That isn't good.
  • Washing the trombone everyday can ruin the insides.
  • If your trombone is irreplaceable, old, or rare do not clean frequently. If its an old valve trombone that works fine, don't wash it.
  • Do not do this on cheap brand instruments.
