Every bird lover knows that the most distasteful job is cleaning the bird cage. Putting it off only makes things worse, because the dropped feathers keep flying outside the cage and the smell is enough to make you nauseous. Here's how to effectively clean the cage and be done with it!

Basic cleaning routine

  1. Line the cage bottom with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper.
  2. Scrape any gunk and feathers off the perches.
  3. Rotate the perches and move around the toys to give your bird some variety.
  4. Give the cage a good scrubbing once a month or so with an avian safe disinfectant while your birds are walking around the house.
  5. Finished.

Vinegar clean

  1. Mix a solution consisting of 1 part white distilled vinegar to 2 parts water.
  2. Don a pair of gloves.
  3. Dip a clean cleaning cloth into the solution. Wipe down the cage floor, sides and perches. Focus on any bird droppings; add more solution as needed.
  4. Wipe over with clean warm water.
  5. Allow to air dry.

  • It helps to buy a cage that features a grate and a removable tray on the bottom. Simply spread newspaper on the tray and most of the droppings will fall through the grate.
  • Throw the newspaper out daily and replace.
  • A safe disinfectant can be made by mixing 1 tablespoon of bleach to a quart of water. Be sure to rinse well and allow to dry before allowing your bird near it.
  • It's advisable to have multiple cages so while you're cleaning one, the bird can be comfortable in the other.
  • Make sure to check for anything on the birds feet too.

  • Do not use cat litter or corncob for the lining, as the dust they give off is harmful to birds.
