An oro blanco is a cross between a pomelo and a white grapefruit and tastes slightly sweeter than a grapefruit. The fruit has a green rind, but is gold in colour once it has been peeled. Oro blanco is a delicious fruit that can be eaten on its own or incorporated into a number of recipes. In order to eat an oro blanco, you can peel and segment the fruit or cut it in half and scoop out the fruit.

Peeling and Segmenting an Oro Blanco

  1. Cut off a slice at each end. Use a sharp straight blade knife and cut off a large slice from the top and bottom of the fruit. Once cut, you should be able to see the exposed bare fruit at either end.
  2. Remove the rind and membrane. Then, stand the fruit on a cutting board with one of the flat ends on the board. Begin slicing the fruit from top to bottom moving around the edge of the fruit. With each slice, try to remove the rind, pith, and membrane so that the bare fruit is exposed.
    • Once you have finished cutting around the edge of the fruit, remove any remaining white pith or membrane with your knife.
  3. Slice segments of fruit. Holding the fruit in your hand, slice the fruit along one membrane towards the centre of the fruit. Then, make a similar cut along the adjacent membrane. This will produce small wedges or segments of oro blanco.
    • Continue this process while rotating around the fruit and slicing individual segments.
  4. Eat the individual segments. Place the segments of fruit into a bowl. You can eat the sliced fruit as is, or try adding the wedges to a citrus salad or fruit cocktail.

Scooping Out the Fruit

  1. Cut the oro blanco in half. Place the oro blanco on a cutting board and using a sharp knife slice through the equator (or center) of the fruit. In other words, cut through the fruit horizontally. Once cut, you should have two halves that expose the fruit in tiny segments.
  2. Place in a bowl with the exposed fruit facing upwards. Take the two halves and place each of them in a bowl. This will help contain the juices and prevent you from making a mess while you eat.
  3. Scoop out segments with a spoon. Using a serrated spoon, scoop out the individual segments of fruit and eat directly. You can sprinkle the oro blanco with sugar to sweeten the fruit, although you want to taste the fruit first because it is quite sweet.
  4. Squeeze the remaining juice into a glass. Once you have finished eating all of the fruit segments you can squeeze any remaining juice into a glass and drink it! Alternatively, you can use your spoon to scoop out the remaining juice.

Using Oro Blanco in a Variety of Recipes

  1. Add oro blanco to salad. In order to make a oro blanco citrus salad, peel and segment one oro blanco and 2 blood oranges. Place the citrus fruit on top of a large bowl filled with mixed greens. Then in a separate bowl combine: ¼ cup (60 ml) of light mayonnaise, ¼ cup (60 ml) of plain yogurt, 2 tablespoons of minced lemongrass, 1 tablespoon of chives, 1 tablespoon of milk, and 1 teaspoon of white sugar.
    • Drizzle the dressing over the salad, toss, and serve.
  2. Make fresh oro blanco juice. Slice the oro blanco so that you remove all of the rind, pith, and peel. Then squeeze the fruit over top of a medium-sized bowl to collect the fresh juice. Pour the juice into a glass and serve with ice and a wedge of orange or grapefruit.
  3. Try an oro blanco smoothie. To make an oro blanco smoothie combine: 1 oro blanco (cut and peeled), 2 carrots (cut and peeled), 1 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger, and a splash of water. Place these ingredients in a blender and mix until you create a thick and frothy smoothie.

Tips

  • You can essentially replace grapefruit with oro blanco in any recipe.
