People in a long distance relationship are more likely to share intimate thoughts and feelings which can lead to a greater sense of intimacy. However, being in a long distance relationship isn't always easy. A lack of physical contact can end up putting a strain on a relationship. If you really care about someone but they have their reservations about long distance relationships, you can talk to them and make plans with them to help convince them that a long distance relationship is worth it.

Talking to Them

  1. Determine if you have a future with them. You should only try a long distance relationship if you’re in a serious relationship and intend to be in a relationship for the long term. Think about whether you're casually dating or whether the relationship is serious. Consider things such as if you live together, how long you've known each other, and how much you care for each other.
    • You can ask them something like "Do you see a future with me?"
  2. Explain your feelings and have a conversation. Have a conversation about how much you care about them and the future that you see with them. Create a picture so that being in the long distance relationship seems like it’s worth it. If the other person reciprocates your feelings and sees a future, you can create plans for your long distance relationship.
    • You can say something like “I love you more than anyone I’ve ever met, and I see myself with you forever, honestly. I know it’s going to be hard, but I think it’s worth staying together when I move away. Do you want to try for a long distance relationship?”
  3. Talk about the benefits of being in a relationship. If you need to do more convincing, you can talk about the benefits of being in a relationship with the person. Reminisce about things that you’ve done in the past, talk about the potential for the future, and talk about how you improve each other's lives.
    • You can say something like “We both love each other, help each other through the hard times, and support each other. I really think the long distance relationship would be worth it."
    • Or something like, “Remember when we first met? We both didn’t know what we were doing and we helped each other grow in so many ways. I don’t know where I’d be without you.”

Making Plans with Your Partner

  1. Make a schedule to talk with each other. If they are afraid that you’ll grow apart, you can convince them by explaining how you can talk to one another. Making a regimented schedule to keep in contact will reassure them that you won't grow apart.
    • Say something like “We can talk to each other every day at 7 pm on Skype. I’ll make sure to call every day.”
    • You can also say "I'll call you every day after work."
  2. Commit to seeing each other if you’re able to. Just because you aren’t close to one another doesn’t mean that you can’t occasionally see each other. Make it a point to see each other at least once a month. You can travel to them, they can travel to you, or you can meet in the middle. Talk about how often you will see each other.
    • Say something like “We can see each other once a month. I’ll fly out to see you in Baltimore towards the beginning of the month when I have off from work.”
  3. Schedule virtual dates if you can't see each other. If you can't afford to see each other or have no time to visit each other, you can have virtual dates over video applications like Skype. Schedule different dates and times when you'll sit down with one another on a video chatting program and have dinner or watch the same movie.
    • Other video dating ideas include going on a picnic, watching your favorite show together, or going to an ice cream shop.
  4. Make plans to move closer to one another. Making a plan to move closer to one another will give you both hope during the tough times and give you both a goal to work towards. Come up with a plan and determine where you’ll both live when you move closer to each other.
    • You can say something like, “It won’t be for too long. My contract is done in December, so it will only be a year and a half and we can live together.”

Maintaining the Long Distance Relationship

  1. Talk every day. Since you won’t be able to see your partner, it’s important that you keep in contact with them in order to maintain the relationship. Talk on the phone or use video chatting apps to talk to them in real time. Ask them about their day and be invested in their lives.
    • You can say something like "Hey, I love you. My day was rough today, how was your day?"
  2. Text or send them messages. To feel like you’re closer, you can text each other throughout the day when you have free time. Leave them funny or relatable messages that you know they will enjoy. This will bring you closer to one another and make it seem like the distance between you isn’t that far.
    • You can text "Hey bae, what are you doing right now?"
    • You can send them a funny picture that you found online.
    • Send a photo text of something interesting that you saw in town.
  3. Develop a full life without your partner. Sitting around and doing nothing can put a strain on the relationship. Go out and have a full and happy life even if your partner doesn't live close to you. Attend social outings, make new friends, or pick up a hobby. The more that stay occupied, the more that you’ll have to talk about and the happier you’ll both be.
    • Encourage your partner to go out and have a full life as well.
  4. Send them gifts in the mail. Sending things like flowers, chocolates, or music in the mail is a romantic gesture that will help maintain the long distance relationship. Personalize the gift by writing a letter to go with the gift. There are websites like KindNotes and RomanceHer that can help you personalize the gift.
  5. Build a strong sense of trust in your relationship. You can help build trust by communicating everything that's going on in both of your lives. Keep your partner updated on what's going on in your life and tell them about your plans. Stay invested in your partner's life and ask them questions about their plans and friends. Give your partner your full trust so that they can reciprocate it.
    • Don't get jealous if they go out and socialize.
  6. Maintain intimacy through conversation, video, text, and photos. Just because you can't physically touch each other doesn't mean that you can't be intimate. Flirt with your partner through text and when you talk to them on the phone. You can also send them flirtatious pictures or wear their favorite outfit when you video chat. Think of other ways to keep the relationship intimate even though you can't see each other.
    • You could say something like, "I saw a photo of you on Facebook today and it reminded me of how beautiful you are."
