A monotype challenge is a challenge in a Pokémon game geared towards people who have an affiliation toward a certain Pokémon type. In essence, you go through the entire game favouring only one type of Pokémon the entire way through.

Steps

  1. Start the game as normal. Choose your starting Pokémon.
  2. Choose a Pokémon type. E.g. Poison, Flying, Water, Ground... any type is acceptable, but some types may be more difficult than others due to rarity and so on).
  3. If the type you have chosen is not available at the beginning stage of the game, there are ways around this. For example the Dragon type does not make an appearance in most games until very late on. If this is the case, you can either trade the required Pokémon from a friend's game or use Gameshark codes to insert them.
  4. The aim of this challenge is to keep to one type throughout the entire game. Essentially, you will be experiencing the Pokémon world as though you were a budding Gym Leader!

Tips

  • Cross-types are acceptable (e.g. Water/Poison (Tentacool); Flying/Poison (Crobat) etc).
  • A relatively similar challenge is the Monocolour Challenge. In this, you compile your team entirely of Pokémon which are the same colour according to the Pokédex (e.g. for a purple team you may have Crobat, Gengar, Koffing and so on). If you pursue this challenge, shiny Pokémon are counted as being their original colour (so if you had a shiny (Pink) Honchkrow, it would still be classed as Black since that is the colour it is listed as in the Pokédex).
  • Legendary Pokémon are allowed!
  • If your chosen type is not available until a certain point and you do not wish to trade or use codes, you could always do a Nuzlocke (see corresponding article) Challenge until you manage to obtain the relevant Pokémon.
  • If you want to run through with a certain type but don't know which Pokémon to use, it may be useful to use this website to generate your team: http://wyncorporation.com/pokemon/
  • Have Potions and Revives on you at all times, especially when battling trainers and gyms with Pokémon that are super effective or have moves that are super effective against your chosen type.
  • HM Slaves are still allowed so long as they are not used in battle.

Warnings

  • By doing a monotype run you will be exposing yourself to a huge potential weakness, so it may be wise to consider using some cross-types to combat this. It is especially useful if you are doing a Water-type run to incorporate a Water/Ground Pokémon to avoid a weakness against Electric-types.
  • It is a very difficult challenge at times, so you may need to grind more than you usually would.
