The latest installment of the Elder Scrolls franchise, Oblivion, is both addictive and challenging. Puzzles and trading are large parts in the game, but none is more so than combat. Everywhere you go you will find creatures to fight and evil to vanquish; but to do this, whether you're a mage, archer or brawler, you need to know how to fight.

Steps

  1. Decide what kind of fighter you want to be. Although there are several classes to choose from, each benefiting certain types of fighting styles more than others, developing your skills will enable you to become whatever fighter you wish to be. The tutorial at the beginning will help you to decide what kind of fighting style suits you the most - be aware though, after you choose what race, class and birth sign you will be for the second time before exiting the sewers, you will not be able to change these attributes again. Fighting styles can include spell casting, using bows, swords, axes or numerous other weapons, or even no weapon at all or a mix of all. However, deciding early on what path you would like to take will help you be a better fighter later on.
  2. Purchase a weapon (For example a sword, axe or club) and a bow equipped with arrows, although bows can be easily substituted with long range destruction spells. Poison should also be bought or preferably self-created, so that you can coat your weapons with it. Spells such as fortify strength or magika are handy to have whilst fighting also.
  3. Poison your arrows and enchant your bow, armour and weapons if they aren't already. Poisoned weapons and enchantments are an effective combination.
  4. Roam the countryside for a creature to slay. Enemies tend to be more active at night, but deep forest is usually dangerous no matter what time of day it is.
  5. Shoot your target, twice if you can manage. If the enemy hasn't spotted you first, it may be advisable to sneak whilst you are shooting to give an extra attack modifier to your bow shots.
  6. Wait for your target to reach your location and attack them first - make sure your first hit is a power attack, which is done by holding down the attack button.
  7. Block when the enemy counter-attacks. You may be knocked back or temporarily stunned, but usually you have enough time to block again before your opponent's next attack.
  8. Strike back soon after your enemy has hit your shield whilst you were blocking as they will have been knocked back a bit, providing a perfect opening for an attack.
  9. Re-poise your weapon if needed to give you the upper hand. Try using different types of poisons depending on the situation; a heavily armed opponent can be subdued with a burden potion and a spell caster can be defeated with a silence potion, rendering them unable to cast spells.
  10. Continue to attack and counter attack and poison you weapons until your opponent is dead.

Tips

  • Save the game before major fights in case you die.
  • If a fight is too hard, regroup with friendly NPC's who can help you. Most towns or cities should have a watchman near the entrance who can help you.
  • Assess the situation continuously; if a fight is too hard don't be afraid to flee.
  • If you have gained any perks in any relevant skills - use them!
  • There are many many ways of fighting, and this only scratches the surface. Create your own style of play that suits you.

Warnings

  • This game is meant to be fun; don't get too wrapped up in being a killing machine!
