Did you know that it is possible to both play with your younger siblings and have fun with them? It's a great way to bond and pass the time together.

Choosing what to do together

  1. Seize opportunities to play together. Going to the park? Bring your T-ball set along! Swimming pool? Bring pool noodles and inner tubes! Remember, in years way down the road, you and your siblings will want to look back on this period of your life and smile, because it was fun!
  2. Play what your siblings want to play, but don't be afraid to compromise with them. If they want to play freeze tag, and you want to play Truth or Dare, you can try to talk them into a game of whenever they get frozen in freeze tag, they have to pick truth or dare. Some siblings might stick to their guns only on what they want to do, however, so be ready to give in to them if you have to.
  3. Plan special events that you can do together, like camping out in the living room or going to the swimming pool. Sometimes - as long as your parents are okay with it - spontaneous or random events can make your siblings surprised and happy, and will strengthen the bond between you.

Playing to their level

  1. If they are little, go easy on them. Let them win (on purpose) at games you play, but don't make that fact blindingly obvious. Make it look like you are trying your hardest to win but sadly lost!
  2. Let your siblings think they're smart. If they are little make silly mistakes while playing or ask questions like if you are running "What do I do with my arms?" Let them win!
  3. Don't be afraid of what people might think, just because you're playing with siblings.

Showing love to your siblings

  1. Love your sibling. Show them how much you love them by treating them to ice-cream on the weekends, bringing them to a museum with their friends, or reading them a story, kissing them and telling them how much you love them. If they know how much you love them, it will be less awkward and more fun when playing with them.
  2. Try to have some alone time once a week, whether it's going out for lunch together or sitting down and watching a movie or your favorite cartoon.
  3. Play the "I Love You" game with toddlers. Have them guess how high you love them. Example: "Do you love me to the roof?" "Higher." "Do you love me to that building over there." "Higher." And so on...
  4. Randomly grab them into a hug. Hold them close and tell them that you love them for always. If you're lucky, they might say it back.

Tips

  • Don't be mean to younger siblings.
  • Share a bond of trust.
  • You can make some super simple presents to them ex: a banana, an ice-cream, a toy etc. They'll be happy.
  • Make them a yummy Sunday ice cream let them add what they want and how much. Don't force them to do something they don't want to do or you might end up upsetting them.
  • Be silly
  • If you have a trampoline you can get some blankets and pillows and watch the sky or watch a movie with them.
  • To keep a good friendship between you perhaps let them borrow some of your things (nothing too precious) or let them have some of your sweets etc
  • Enrich the playtime by making it educational for them. Give them life advice or teach them a new skill. Children enjoy learning more when it is done in a fun environment.
  • Play nicely together and try not to quarrel over toys.

Warnings

  • If they want to play something else let them, don't say no, carry on if you think you can.
  • Don't play something that you do with your usual friends because they might not get it or they might get hurt.
  • They may ask you to play everyday and in-front of your friends.
