How to Say Some Common Phrases and Words in Tagalog

If you plan on going to the Philippines, here are some common phrases and words you might need to know. Plus, IPA pronunciation! These can really help you.

Steps

  1. Learn and practice these basic phrases to get you started:
    • Nasaan ang banyo? /'nɑ sɑ ɑn 'ɑnŋ bɑn nio/ (Where's the restroom?)
    • Hindi ako marunong mag-Tagalog /hin ˈdi ʌˈkɔ mɑ ˈru nɔŋ mɑg tʌ ˈgɑ lɔg/ (I don't speak Tagalog)
    • Marunong ka ba mag-Ingles? /mʌˈrunɔŋ kʌ bɑŋ mɑg iŋˈgles/ (Can you speak in English?) Note that you can replace "Ingles" with the actual English word "English" because most Filipinos don't use Ingles anymore."
    • Salamat! /sɑˈlɑ mɑt/ (Thank you)You can also just say Thank You. In fact, it is better to use Thank You.
    • Maraming salamat! /mʌ rɑ miŋ sɑ ˈlɑ mɑt/ (Thank you very much)
    • Walang Anuman /wʌˈlɑng ʌ nuˈ mɑn/(You're welcome)

  6. Say some expressions
    • Ayoko /ɑ ˈjɔ kɔ/(I don't like (it)). For formal, you can say Ayoko po
    • Siyempre /siˈem pre/ (of course!)

Tips

  • If you can't remember these words, say it in English. Most filipinos are fluent in English.
  • Some of these words are very bookish and not modern. Try talking to a native speaker for a better grasp.
  • When pronouncing the words, don't make the "ow" sound for "o", not /æ/ for "a", and don't aspirate the t's, g's, k's, d's, and other consonants. Filipino accent is like Spanish and Italian accents, however, nowadays, Filipino accent becomes softer.
  • Always add "opo" / "po" when talking to older people.

Warnings

  • Be careful not to copy words you hear from the Philippine's streets as people are fond of using swear words.
