Do you want to make that curly-haired wig straight, instead of spending more on a straight-haired wig? A lot of people looking for how to straighten a wig are generally cosplayers and have modlon, kanekelon or tokoyalon fiber wigs, so this article offers more than one different methods.

Straightening Iron Method

  1. Get out your wig. Make sure it's clean, dry, and heat-safe.
  2. Heat up a straightening iron by following the directions that come with it. Be patient. Make sure it's nice and hot. Remember not to make it hotter than the recommended temperature for the wig.
  3. Set the wig on something to make it easier to work with, like a wig stand or a mannequin head.
  4. Starting with the bottom of the wig, straighten small pieces of hair at a time. Be careful not to hold the straightener on the wig for too long because it will burn.
  5. Move on to the middle area after you finish straightening the bottom pieces.
  6. Straighten the top pieces. The idea is to work from bottom to top, since it's much easier than straightening an entire strand in one go. It is also easier to do this because wigs normally have wefts sewn on in layers.
  7. Let the wig cool completely.
  8. Comb it out carefully. Check for loose hairs.
  9. Groom the wig by cutting the flyaway hairs.
  10. Spray a light coating of hairspray over the entire wig to keep it from reverting to its former curliness. Spray from several inches away to avoid using too much hairspray.

Hot Water Method

  1. Consider trying the hot water method. It is the best method for both straightening and curling a wig.It is also the best method for synthetic wigs that may be more delicate to heated styling tools.
  2. Place the wig on a stand. Allow the hair to fall straight down without resting on anything. Tripods work brilliantly if you fit a mannequin head on them.
  3. Boil a pot full of water. Boil about 1.5L for a long wig and 1L or less for a short wig.
  4. Pour it carefully over the wig, making sure that it completely covers it. The heat of the water will soften the plastic fibers and will pull them down.
  5. Avoid combing or brushing a wig when it is wet.
  6. Wait until it is dry. Use a wide soft-bristled brush. For extremely curly wigs, it will take more than one treatment and a lot of time.
  7. Repeat the method if necessary. It does no damage to the wig and can be done while the wig is still wet. This is a permanent style; you will need to re-curl the wig if you don't want it straight anymore. You're basically remolding plastic into a new shape, so will need to mold it back if you want the curls again.

Tips

  • Wigs are more fragile than real hair, so be very careful. Use a low-heat setting on your straightener.
  • Avoid humidity after your wig dries, or it may start to curl and frizz again.
  • Do not use too much hairspray. Too much can have a dull filmy buildup to form on the wig. It also helps to spray from a distance.
  • Don't use hairspray, as it will mess it up. Simply use water if you want it to keep its shape.

Warnings

  • Do not leave the straightening iron on one part of the hair for more than five slow seconds. This can damage and/or burn the wig.
  • Make sure to unplug the straightening iron once you are done, especially if you have small children.
  • Make sure the wig is heat-safe! Essentially, that means it needs to be made of real hair, but if you have an artificial air wig, make sure that it is made of a fiber that is safe for heat styling. Olefin and polypropylene wigs are not heat safe.
  • Be careful of that hot iron!
  • Do not use a straightener, curling iron, or other hot implement on a synthetic wig. The hairs will melt, and you can never get it back to normal.
