You may find that when you receive AMBER Alerts on your phone, they're in places that are very far from you, making them a disconcerting nuisance that you aren't able to help with. If you find AMBER Alerts to be disruptive, you can prevent them from being sent you with some quick settings changes.

On an iPhone

  1. Open your Settings app. The Settings icon is a gray cog that you should be able to find on your home screen. Tap it to open it.
    • If you don't see the Settings app on your home screen, swipe left on your screen to view the other apps on your iPhone. The Settings app can't be deleted, so you'll find it on one of those screens.
  2. Tap "Notifications." The screen you'll be taken to is where you can configure the notifications that apps you have are able to send to you, but you can also toggle Amber Alerts on this screen.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page. There, you'll find a section called "Government Alerts."
  4. Tap the slider button next to the "AMBER alerts" heading. You'll no longer receive these alerts when they're sent to all of the phones in a certain area.

On an Android

  1. Open your Settings app. Because of the slight variations in the interface of different phones running on Android, the location of the setting used to turn off AMBER Alerts will be different. This method works on phones running on a "stock" version of Android, and should work for most others.
  2. Tap "More." You're looking for the Cell Broadcasts menu which, on most phones, won't be readily visible from your primary settings page. Look for it among your main settings page first, though, just in case.
  3. Tap "Cell Broadcasts." This is the page that manages all of the alerts you receive from sources that are unrelated to personal communication.
  4. Tap the box next to "Show AMBER Alerts." The tick in the box will remove, and you'll no longer receive alerts on your phone when they are sent out to the public.
