If you need actors for your film, TV show, commercial, promotional video, or theater production, there are a few ways to search for your next 'star.' Read on to learn on what you need to consider, where to find actors, and other advice.

Steps

  1. Set up a clear list of traits and characteristics you are looking for, as well as the skills the actors need to have. Having a vision of the appearance and abilities of the performers can help you to narrow down your search. Of course, you don't always have to stick to what you've written down, a lot of people change their mind to suit a different person.
  2. Remember the budget, the deadline, and all of the small details that the person you hire will need to know. Mapping out how much time and money you have for your search is crucial, since this will give you an idea of which method you should use.
  3. Call a talent agent, or look through portfolios on their website to see if anyone has the right qualifications/appearance.
  4. Leave an advertisement in a high circulation newspaper or on an ad site. This is the way to go if you have very specific criteria, or if you're on a low budget. Place an advert in The Stage or any other appropriate magazine commonly read by actors seeking employment.
  5. Use any connections you may have to track down the perfect man (or woman) for the job, such as an aspiring performer, a casting director, a drama teacher, etc.
  6. Use social media sites to contact actors or widen your search area.
  7. Search for actors online and contact them through their website.
  8. Hold an open call audition. This is great if you don't have enough resources and/or knowledge for the other methods. Just be warned that many hopeful but untalented people will pass through the doors.
  9. Attend plays, concerts, recitals, or even a few acting classes to search for the talent.

Tips

  • Don't give up. You may become frustrated and upset when no one can portray the characters or make the story come alive the way you imagined, but it will take time to comb through the thousands of aspiring performers before you can find the perfect one.
  • Be prepared to spend time with these people. Don't pick actors who fit the part perfectly if you don't get along with them.
  • It is important to treat your actors with respect once you begin production. Find a way to keep control and share your vision without being rude or overbearing, since this can discourage the actors and ultimately influence their abilities, which is only bringing damage to your production.
  • Most importantly, be happy with the people you choose. Not only will you have to spend time with them, but you should be able to be proud of the production and confident that you have the right performers for each character, or all of the time and money invested in the process will have been wasted.
  • Be honest about how much you can pay them, what exactly the job entails, and how many hours they should be willing to spend on set.
  • If you happen to find a group of people who you could see embodying the character, hold callbacks to narrow it down. Testing out things like their chemistry, method acting and other skills can help you pick out the best of the best.
  • Don't be afraid to be upfront about what your actor should look like; it's better to say what you want than to have to make unnecessary rejections later on.
