Pizzas taste great, but sometimes they take a little too much space and time to create. If you're tight on time and kitchen counter space, try making a pizza sub, instead! Most people love the zippy sub sandwich with Italian sausage, pepperoni, and salami. They provide the robust flavors in this family-pleasing fare. If you'd like, serve the crispy subs with extra pizza sauce for dipping. Here's how to make easy and quite tasty pizza subs right in your kitchen. Makes 1 sub per person

Steps

  1. Spread sauce on the sub bread. Slice open your sub and spread your amount of tomato sauce inside, spreading gently with a spoon.
  2. Grate your cheese. Grate your preferred cheese over the layer of sauce and make sure that it tops neatly.
  3. Add extra toppings to your pizza if desired. At the moment, it'll be a plain cheese pizza sub, but nothing's wrong with adding some pizazz. Feel free to choose your favorite toppings from pineapple slices to olives, use different toppings you enjoy adding.
  4. Preheat your grill to high. Turn your grill on to all the way high and have it preheat.
  5. Grill. Place your raw pizza sub on a baking tray and place it in the grill with the door slightly left open, if possible.
    • Leaving the door a bit open will help you check on the subs occasionally and avoid having it burn.
  6. Enjoy! Remove the pizza sub out when the bread has fully crisped and the cheese has melted, usually about five minutes. Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • Bread (the sub type)
  • 1 tablespoon tomato or pizza sauce
  • 2 teaspoons cheese (any type you desire)
  • Other desired pizza toppings (i.e pepperoni, ham, green olives, pepper, mushrooms, etc.)

Tips

  • It might be a good idea to cook one side of the bread before you add the topping on or you will get a half cold and half warm pizza.
  • If you don't have tomato sauce on hand try using tomato pasta instead.
  • Lightly brush salted butter or vegetable on the bread before adding the sauce. This gives it a sweet, greasier taste.

Warnings

  • Keep in an eye on the sub while it cooks. Since the heat is on high it will bake faster than normal.
  • Avoid adding too much tomato sauce on the sub. Too much can cause the sauce to drip and will ruin your baking tray. A tablespoon is usually enough.

Things You'll Need

  • Oven
  • Baking tray
  • Grill
  • Metal spoon
  • Grater
  • Serving plate
  • Tongs
