If you own a ton of books and are getting worried that you have no more space on your bookshelf, don't worry! There are some steps that you can follow that will make your bookshelf more spacious. Instead of stacking your books horizontally and perfectly, mix it up a bit!

Steps

  1. Stack books on top of each other. Flip your books horizontally and put one above the other until it reaches the top of the shelf. The first book of a series/trilogy should be nearest to the bottom of the shelf and the last book should be near the top of the shelf. Think about it, if you can stack ten books horizontally, then you can stack 20 books in that space!
  2. Get a floating bookshelf. Yes, these are a thing. When your bookshelf is overflowing, get one or a few floating bookshelves and stack the books on top of each other. These are really cool and an efficient way to store your books without the need of the bookshelf taking up lots of space.
  3. Have an unhaul. Unhauls are when, instead of purchasing books, you take some books of the shelf that you have already read and don't plan on rereading or books that you have started and don't think you're going to finish. This may seem dreadful to some, but these are the books that are preventing you from packing your shelf with new and fantastic books. You can give these books away to friends, family, or donate them to people in need.
  4. Stack the books on the top shelf of your bookshelf. If you have a top bookshelf that stops somewhat close to your ceiling, stack as many books as you can up there. This tip really helps because the top shelf has the most space for books. You can stack books that are sort of old up there or that you don't plan on rereading anytime soon.
  5. Put books that you don't like at the back of your bookshelf. Put the books that you don't really enjoy near the very back of your shelf and stack books that you do like on top of each other in front of the books that you don't like. The books that you do enjoy will be easier to access as well.
  6. Think of your books as a puzzle. All books are different shapes and sizes, so one book may fit in a small crevice on top of your stacked books and one book may not. So just play around with your books and try to fit as many books as you can into as many spaces as you can. For example, if you have a tiny space at the top of your bookshelf, stack one or a few tiny books there. If you have a big book, stack it in a spacious area.

Tips

  • Know that your bookshelf may not look perfect but it will have a certain charm to it that shows that you love books. Not all bookshelves have to be perfect, so just be creative.
  • Try to go to the library more often to make sure you don't waste space and money on books that you really don't enjoy.
