Grease and dirt build up in hair every day. These steps will help to remove oil and grime through proper shampoo cleaning and rinsing.

Steps

  1. Soak your hair, first. It's important that the hair is wet to make shampooing easy otherwise it won't work. Use warm or cold water.
  2. Massage your scalp. Petrissage is a scalp massaging technique to stimulate blood-flow to the scalp encouraging healthy hair and scalp, it also removes dirt.
  3. Shampoo your hair. Hair usually only needs one or two applications of shampoo. More than this can lead to static or fly-away results and leave the hair unprotected. If the first shampoo application doesn't lather - and you are using a product that lathers - rinse, then shampoo a second time.
    • As part of the current tend to remove irritants or brand products as environmentally conscious, more shampoos have chemicals, such as sodium laurel sulfate and others, left out of their products that produce that lather people have grown accustomed. An easy test for if your product is meant to lather is to put a minuscule amount in wet, clean hands and rub for a few seconds: if large bubbles form throughout, the product lathers; if small bubbles form at the edges of the distributed soap, but it mostly just multiplied, your product does not lather.
    • Lathering is less a test of cleanliness than a sign of distribution: if the product didn't lather, it could not have cleaned your hair because your hair was so dirty, it could not move around. Similarly, if a non-lathering shampoo could not be distributed through your hair, it could not clean everything either.
  4. Rinse your hair. It's important to ensure that no shampoo residue remains as this can dry the scalp out and create a flaky itchy scalp, it also leaves a greasy film.
  5. Add conditioner. Gently squeeze the water out of your hair. Distribute the conditioner evenly through the hair using only your fingers. Allow conditioner to sit in your hair from one minute to five minutes, depending on hair condition.
    • Never use a comb in the shower. It will pull on your hair and create more breakages in the long run.
  6. Rinse, Again. Rinse the hair thoroughly ensuring no residue is left behind. To finish use cold water which will close the cuticles, resulting in shine and give your hair bounce.
  7. Thoroughly dry your hair. When towel-drying never rub the hair as this will cause tangling and damage the cuticle of the hair.
  8. Dry hair. Use a blow dryer or air dry. Air drying is better for you hair because blow dryers dry out your hair.
  9. Style your hair. Put mousse or gel into your hair as anyone usually would to add style.

Tips

  • Don't wash your hair every day as it causes your hair to dry out.
  • Always completely wet your hair before you apply shampoo, because if you don't your hair will look dull and not vibrant like it should be.
  • Shampoo works best on very wet hair and conditioner works best on gently squeezed-out (or not so wet) hair.
  • Brushing your hair before taking a shower helps undo any tangles. This also makes the shampooing/conditioning process easier.
  • To lose less hair in the shower, replace your brush with a wide-toothed comb, and comb it gently before you get into the shower.
  • Buy shampoo that suits your hair type.
  • When you wash your hair rinse it with warm water, then after you shampoo and conditioner rinse it off with cold water to get the effect of shiny hair.
  • Always completely rinse out shampoo before you condition because if you don't you will get greasy hair easier.
  • Try to use a sodium free shampoo because sodium can dry out your scalp and could be responsible for thinning your hair.
  • If you have access to rainwater, boil a kettle's worth of it and sit it next to the shower. After you have finished with your conditioner, rinse it out in rainwater. You won't believe the wonderful softness of your hair.
  • After shampooing and conditioning its best to use a moisturizer or heat protector before blow drying because over time a blow dryer will dry out your hair!
  • Using excess shampoo during an application can dry up your hair resulting to hair fall. So, try to find out the least amount of shampoo required to wash your hair.
  • If you have an oily scalp, only condition the bottom of your hair.
  • Be sure to properly rinse your hair otherwise, the chemicals in the shampoo will dry out your hair and cause it to look dull, it will also leave a nasty residue that builds up and makes your hair greasy.
  • Try using less heat as it will make you hair thicker and healthier.
  • Always wear argon oil and don't rinse it out straight away, wait untill the hair is dry. Then brush with a comb that has the rubber balls at the end this will stop breakage and give your hair a natural-looking shine.
  • Leave the conditioner in for about 30 seconds to 1 minute before washing. This will make your hair extra soft.
  • After massaging in the shampoo, leave shampoo to sit for one to five minutes, massage again, and rinse. This gives the shampoo a chance to break down dirt and oil, which can allow you to use less shampoo and/or even avoid a second shampoo.
  • As weird as it may seem, using vinegar in your hair after you shampoo, it can make your hair shiny.
  • Air drying can be better for your hair than blow-drying it. Only use a blowdryer if you need to (Example-you just got out of the shower and are running late for school).
  • Don't wash your hair every day cause it will be very dry and easy to be broken.

Warnings

  • Never brush wet hair. Use a wide tooth comb if you must comb your hair while it's wet. Wet hair will stretch and break easily. Never use a brush on wet hair.
  • Avoid hot water, it will damage your hair, causing the keratin to soften.
  • Be sure to close your eyes, otherwise they will sting and will be irritated.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals, such as shampoos and conditioners containing water softeners and sanitizers.
  • If you are allergic to a shampoo, try to get a more basic shampoo that has less ingredients, and see if your allergy reaction diminishes. See a dermatologist if the problem persists.
  • Shampoo/soap can be damaging to hair so wash only when needed; only wash the areas needed, e.g. If you went in to bathe because you saw greasy roots, that does not mean you have to wash your ends this time.
  • Use white vinegar to keep your scalp healthy, but don't use it too much, as it will damage your hair.
