Most people spend a lot of their time on the road. If you’re one of these people, upgrading your car’s multimedia system can be one of your main priorities to make those long hours tolerable. But having too many wires for your car’s multimedia system can be bothersome and may even cause driving problems. One simple upgrade that you can do to eliminate this issue is by adding a Bluetooth to your car.

Using a Bluetooth Head Unit

  1. Purchase an aftermarket head unit with a Bluetooth feature. Stock head units of newer car models already have Bluetooth capability. But if your car is a bit older, you can purchase these kinds of car radios for at least a hundred dollars from your local car parts store.
  2. Install the head unit. Aftermarket head units with Bluetooth capability are designed just like any other head units. To install, simply remove your current car radio and disconnect all the wires behind it. Then, following the same wiring diagram or what is instructed in your new head unit’s manual, connect the wires to the new radio and slide it back to the head unit bay.
    • Better yet, have the new head unit installed by the store where you purchased it from. If you got yours from a local store and not over the Internet, installation should also come with the price tag you paid.
  3. Connect your Bluetooth enabled device to your new head unit. Most head units have a quick-access button on its panel that you can use to instantly enable its Bluetooth. Once it’s switched on, you can start connecting your mobile devices like smartphones and MP3 players to your radio.

Using a Bluetooth Receiver

  1. Purchase a Bluetooth receiver. If you don’t want to replace your head unit, you can simply add a Bluetooth receiver to it. You can buy one from your local computer and electronics store or from the Internet starting at $25.
  2. Connect the Bluetooth receiver to your car. Receivers are very easy to connect; all you need is a 3.5 mm audio cable with two male ends (just like the ones at the end of your ordinary ear/headphones), which should already come with the receiver package. Just plug one end of the cable to the Bluetooth receiver and connect the other to your car radio’s 3.5 mm audio jack port and you’re good to go.
    • Note that your car head unit should have the feature to play audio contents using the 3.5 mm audio input port, otherwise you won’t be able to use the receiver.
  3. Connect your Bluetooth-enabled device to your Bluetooth receiver. Press the Power button on the receiver to switch it on and your mobile device should be able to detect and connect to it. You can start playing music from your MP3 players or even accept phone calls.

Using a Bluetooth Car Kit

  1. Purchase a Bluetooth car kit. If your head unit can’t use a Bluetooth receiver, you can always use a separate Bluetooth car kit. You can purchase one from your local car accessories store or from the Internet starting at $50.
  2. Plug in your car kit. Unlike Bluetooth receivers, a car kit can function all on its own. Just connect it to your car’s cigarette lighter port for power, or if it comes with rechargeable batteries, you can just clip it on your windshield visor.
  3. Connect your Bluetooth-enabled device to your Bluetooth car kit. Press the Power button on the kit to switch it on and your mobile device should be able to detect and connect to it. You can start playing music from your MP3 players or even accept phone calls.

Tips

  • Unless you have sufficient car electrical knowledge, have your head units installed by a professional to avoid any wiring issues that may cause grounding or fire.
