How to Sign Up for a US Trusted Traveler Program

Ever wanted to save time at the airport or cross the border faster? Trusted Traveler programs, such as TSA Pre✓® or Global Entry, allow travelers to use expedited lanes when crossing international borders from or to the United States or at the airport. If you ever wanted to sign up for one, the following instructions will guide you from signing online to receiving your Known Traveler Number (KTN) or Trusted Traveler card.

Signing up for TSA Pre✓®

  1. Consider TSA Pre✓® if you travel often domestically in the US. It saves you time and stress since you do not have to remove shoes, laptops, liquids, belts and light jackets.
    • Enrolling for TSA Pre✓® typically takes up to 2-3 weeks. A TSA Pre✓® membership would last for five years and costs $85.
    • The program is only open to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, and lawful permanent residents. TSA Pre✓® is ideal for people who travel regularly on domestic flights in the United States.
  2. Submit an online application. Go onto the application website for TSA Pre✓® and fill out all your information in the fields.
  3. Schedule an appointment. Select your enrollment center and time.
  4. Attend your appointment. You must bring your required documents, and you would be fingerprinted to get approved for TSA Pre✓®.
  5. Receive your Known Traveler Number (KTN) if you're accepted. Add your KTN to your flight ticket, and you can now use TSA Pre✓® expedited security screening lanes!

Signing up for Global Entry

  1. Consider Global Entry if you're a frequent international traveler. This program allows travelers to speed through Customs and Border Protection processing into the U.S. following an international flight. With Global Entry, you do not have to fill out paper arrival forms, such as a Customs declaration, when you enter the U.S. Global Entry allows expedited vehicle/pedestrian entrance into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico via land borders.
    • Global Entry also includes TSA Pre✓®.
    • A Global Entry membership lasts for five years and costs $100. The program is open to U.S. Citizens and U.S. Lawful Permanent Residents along with select other nationalities. Global Entry is ideal for people who travel regularly to and from international airports.
  2. Create an account on Global Online Enrollment System (GOES).
  3. Log into your GOES account and complete the application. Fill out all of the required fields and pay an $100 non-refundable fee.
  4. Schedule an interview once your application is approved by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Log into your GOES account and create an appointment at a Global Entry Enrollment Center.
  5. Attend your appointment. At the enrollment center, you would be asked questions, your picture would be taken, and your fingerprints would be scanned.
  6. Wait for your card. Once you get your Global Entry card, you are approved for Global Entry! You can now use Global Entry kiosks after arrival from an international flight.

Signing up for NEXUS

  1. Consider NEXUS if you're a frequent traveler to Canada. NEXUS allows travelers expedited processing when entering the United States and Canada. With NEXUS, members can use NEXUS kiosks when entering Canada by air and Global Entry kiosks when entering the United States for expedited processing. NEXUS also allows expedited pedestrian/vehicle entry into the U.S. or Canada.
    • The program also includes TSA Pre✓® and expedited marine entry into the United States from Canada. A NEXUS membership lasts for five years and costs $50. The program is open to U.S. and Canadian citizens and lawful permanent residents (LPRs). NEXUS is ideal for people who frequently travel between the U.S. and Canada.
  2. Submit your application. There are two ways to do so: By Global Online Enrollment System (GOES) or by Mail
    • By GOES
      • Create a GOES account.
      • Log into your GOES account and complete the application. Fill out all of the required fields and pay an $50 non-refundable fee.
      • Once your application is approved by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), you would need to schedule an interview. Log into your GOES account and create an appointment at a NEXUS Enrollment Center.
    • By Mail
      • Print out and complete the NEXUS application.
      • Send your completed application, along with the $50 (CAD or USD) non-refundable fee and photocopies of your documentation (e.g., passport) to your preferred Canadian Processing Center.
      • Once your application is approved, you will receive a letter stating you to create an appointment at a NEXUS Enrollment Center.
  3. Attend your appointment. At the enrollment center, you would be asked questions, your picture would be taken, and your fingerprints would be scanned.
  4. Wait for your card. Once you had finished your interview, you will receive your NEXUS card within two weeks by mail. When you receive your card, you can now use expedited lanes at Canadian and U.S. airports and NEXUS lanes at land borders.

Signing up for SENTRI

  1. Consider SENTRI if you drive across the U.S.-Mexico border a lot. The Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection (SENTRI)] allows members to use the designated expedited lanes for quicker vehicle or pedestrian entry into the United States at the U.S.-Mexico border.
    • SENTRI also allows members to use NEXUS lanes when entering the United States from Canada by land, and to use Global Entry kiosks when entering the United States by air. The program also includes TSA Pre✓®.
    • An SENTRI membership lasts for five years and costs $122.50. The program is open to citizens of any nationality. Foreign nationals must also obtain any visas necessary for entry into the U.S. or Mexico. SENTRI is ideal for people who frequently travel to the U.S. from Mexico.
  2. Create an account on Global Online Enrollment System (GOES).
  3. Log into your GOES account and complete the application. Fill out all of the required fields and pay an $122.50 non-refundable fee.
  4. Wait for your application to be approved by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Then you will need to schedule an interview. Log into your GOES account and create an appointment at a SENTRI Enrollment Center.
  5. Attend your appointment. Bring your passport, one other form of identification, vehicle registration, and evidence of a U.S. automobile insurance. At the enrollment center, you would be asked questions, your picture would be taken, and your fingerprints would be scanned.
  6. Wait for your card in the mail. Once you had finished your interview and been approved, you will receive your SENTRI card within two weeks by mail. When you receive your card, you can use SENTRI lanes when entering southern land border crossings, NEXUS lanes when entering the U.S. from Canada, and use Global Entry kiosks at U.S. airports.

Signing up for FAST

  1. Consider FAST if you're transporting goods into the US frequently. The Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program allows members to use designated FAST lanes to quickly transport goods into the U.S. FAST vehicle lanes process cargo at land border ports of entry that serve commercial cargo.
    • A FAST membership lasts for five years and costs $50. The program is open to U.S. citizens, U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident, Canadian citizens, Canadian permanent residents, and Mexican Nationals. FAST is ideal for commercial truck drivers who are transporting low-risk shipments into the U.S. from Canada and Mexico
  2. Create an account on Global Online Enrollment System (GOES).
  3. Log into your GOES account and pick either the U.S. / Mexico FAST or U.S. / Canada FAST application. Complete the application, fill out all of the required fields, and pay an $50 non-refundable fee.
  4. Schedule an interview once your application is approved by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Log into your GOES account and create an appointment at a FAST Enrollment Center.
  5. Attend your appointment. Bring your passport and one other form of identification (e.g. valid driver's license).
  6. Wait for your approval. Once you had finished your interview and been approved, you can now use FAST lanes at border crossings.
