Aromatherapy is known to help calm and relax people, and it can be used to treat a variety of different ailments. There are many different stores that sell the oils, but learning how to make aromatherapy oils on your own will provide you with a high-quality product that costs less money. You can make several different oils to have on hand to help with whatever ailment is bothering you or someone you know. Additionally, making aromatherapy oils can be a fun project and produce a great gift for someone important in your life.

Steps

  1. Sterilize your jars and lids. Place them in a large pot of boiling water for around 5 minutes. Allow the jars and lids to cool and air dry.
  2. Choose your herbs. See the tips section for recipe suggestions. Chop up enough of the fresh herbs to fill up the jar. Chopping the herbs before you place them in the jar allows more of the herb's natural oils to seep into the essential oils. Fill the jar with the freshly chopped herbs, and compress them.
  3. Heat about .5 pint (.237 L) of light unscented oil in a small saucepan until it reaches 160 degrees Fahrenheit (71.1 degrees Celsius). Use a meat or candy thermometer to obtain a precise reading. A candy thermometer generally has measurements in 1-degree increments, which provides you with a more accurate reading than a meat thermometer.
  4. Pour the hot oil over the fresh herbs in the jar. Use the knife blade to move the oil and herbs around to release any air bubbles and to seal the lid. Allow the jar to cool until you can handle it.
  5. Use a label and marker to indicate what blend is in the jar.
  6. Pick a cool, dark place to store the jar for at least 1 month. The oils from the herbs will infuse with the oil in the jar to make essential oils. Aromatherapy essential oils must be stored in the dark to prevent light from breaking them down.

Tips

  • Peppermint Oil: Use fresh or dried peppermint, and follow the instructions above. Peppermint oil can relieve stomach pain and cramps. It can also be used to help fight cold and flu symptoms or used as a muscle rub.
  • Sage Oil: Use fresh or dried sage as the herb in the instructions above. Sage oil is an ideal choice for combating symptoms of menopause and also works as an antiseptic.
  • Rose Petal Oil: Use fresh rose petals, picked after the morning dew has evaporated, and follow the instructions above. Rose petal oil is an excellent choice for a skin-care product and may improve your mood if you suffer from seasonal affective disorder.
  • Rosemary Oil: Use fresh or dried rosemary, and follow the instructions above. Rosemary oil is a good choice for combating dandruff. For a muscle rub, use half rosemary oil and half peppermint oil.
  • When using dried herbs for your aromatherapy essential oils, you will need only about 1/4 of what you would need when using fresh. The oils become highly concentrated in the drying process.

Warnings

  • Rosemary oil should not be used by pregnant women. Anyone who is pregnant should check with a doctor to ensure all the oils are safe to use during her pregnancy.
