A Minecraft grass block makes a fun and useful container for toys, clothes or anything else a child might like to keep tidy in their room. This tutorial will explain how to build your own box that looks just like a Minecraft grass block.

Preparation

  1. Find the things you'll need. Follow the list below under Things You'll Need.
  2. Print off the Minecraft pattern pages from any internet site. There are many different sites to choose from. You can check Pinterest or just google "Minecraft patterns" or "Minecraft prints". A suggested site is given below under Sources and Citations.
    •  Just a heads up––these will use a decent amount of ink printing! You could also print them black and white and let your children color them in.
  3. Print four grass sheets for the four sides of the box. You can use a dirt pattern sheet for the box lid or you can use a dirt pattern sheet for the face of the box lid and one grass sheet to make grass sides around the lip of the box lid (whatever your preference may be).
    • This tutorial used a dirt pattern sheet for the face of the lid and grass sides around the lip of the lid and blended the grass and dirt to look more realistic.
  4. Measure your box and cut the papers accordingly to the size that you need. It is recommended that you leave a little extra on all sides and cut down from there. That way you do not cut the papers too small (you can always fold over the extra and blend with Mod Podge). Cut all papers to size before you start the Mod Podge process, so you’re not having to stop constantly to cut them.

Placing the Papers onto the Box

  1. Begin the Mod Podge process. Start with a random side of your box. Lightly apply the Mod Podge glue all over the box, not too thick.
  2. Place the first Minecraft grass piece of paper down onto the box. Ensure that it aligns properly. Carefully smooth it out so there are no wrinkles or air bubbles in it.
  3. Continue. Once the first side is applied, you can apply the next coat over the top of the sheet. Apply another thin coat and make sure it goes on smoothly. When you finish that, repeat the process for the rest of the sides.
  4. Prepare the cover. Once you have completed all four sides, you can do the cover either with the dirt sheet or the dirt and grass sheets. When all four sides and the top are done, check for any areas that may need more Mod Podge.
  5. Done. You now have a Minecraft grass block. These boxes make awesome storage containers and kids love them. Admire your work!

Tips

  • For the sponges, you can buy the 1" Super Value Pack Foam Brushes for $5.99 and you will have many leftover brushes. If you do not want to have extra brushes, you can buy them individually for about 0.60 cents.
  • You can do this for almost any type of block!

Things You'll Need

  • An 8-inch square paper mache craft box from a craft and hobby store; this box will be the basis of the Minecraft block
  • A container of Matte Mod Podge (8-ounce container)
  • Brushes to apply Mod Podge (a pack of sponge brushes will work and you can throw them away when you are done with them)
  • A printer and plenty of colored ink; this will use approximately ¾ of a brand-new cartridge
  • A pair of scissors to cut your printed sheets
  • A ruler to measure your paper to fit the box sides
  • A pencil to mark measurements
