Cabinet curtains will soften the look of your kitchen. When hung with small ring clips, they are easy to use and will accordion fold to the left or right when opened. They are a convenient feature when going into the same cabinet frequently during food preparation. The cost is very minimal compared to replacing cabinets or cabinet doors. Wide width wood cabinet door panels are made from older growth trees. If you do need to remodel, keeping your original wood cabinet frames and just adding cabinet curtains is a very eco-friendly way to go!

Steps

  1. Use “barrel brackets” to put up cabinet curtain rods. Cabinet curtain rods need to hug the cabinet so they are not in the way and so a spill that runs off the edge of a counter won’t drip onto the cabinet curtains. Countertops are often only an inch or two wider than the base cabinets.
    • Barrel brackets are low-profile, meaning they hold the rod close into the cabinet.
  2. Position the brackets so the top of the barrel is about 1 1/4" above the upper corners of the opening in the face frame, and at even distances from both outer edges. Make a mark through the top and bottom holes where the two screws for each bracket will be drilled.
    • Use outside mount barrel brackets, if you want them mounted on the outside of a face frame. They will project out only 5/8 inch from the cabinet to be mounted on. This type of bracket will enable the curtains to cover most of the face frame.
    • Use inside mount barrel brackets, if curtains are to be mounted within a face frame. Inside mount brackets will enable the rod and curtains to fit flush within a face frame and not cover it at all. In the application above, inside mount barrel brackets were used to hang curtains between prep table legs.
  3. Drill the two holes for each pair of barrel brackets using a 3/32” drill bit.
  4. Screw the barrel brackets tightly onto the frame. Remove the barrels from the bracket base by simply unscrewing them and set them aside.
  5. Measure the distance between the two bracket bases with the barrels removed.
  6. Cut the rods to fit snugly between to the two bracket bases.
  7. Get the curtain dimensions right.
    • For curtain width, measure about 1 ½ times the length of the rod in order to have loose gathers. Loose gathers seem to look the best and work the best for kitchen cabinet curtain applications.
    • For curtain height, measure from the floor (or from the top of the toe kick space) up to about 1" below the top of the rod - the of the ring clips takes up one inch. To allow for a ½” inch top and bottom hem, add another 1” to the height measurement. Mark the fabric with chalk and a straight edge. Cut out your rectangular pattern. Iron down a 1/2” hem on all four sides. Sew your own curtains by simply hemming all four sides.
  8. Attach the clip rings across the top of the curtain. Squeeze the ring tightly on the outside perimeter to make the clip open. Space clip rings approximately every 4”.
  9. Hang the curtains on the rod by threading the rod through the rings. Put one barrel on each end of the rod, hold the rod in place between the brackets, and screw the barrels onto the brackets.
  10. Finished. Kitchen cabinet curtains added to a butcher block prep table for a softer look and additional storage space underneath.
